St Augustine’s College will carry the weight of North Queensland on its shoulders once again after emphatically punching the school’s ticket to the statewide finals on the Sunshine Coast in August.

The Cairns institution left no doubt over which northern school deserved the honour of competing for state glory with a 14.7 (91) to 3.4 (23) win over Ignatius Park College at Townsville’s Riverway Stadium.

St Augustine’s made the most of an opening quarter headwind to embark on a 43-point scoring run before Iggy Park could trouble the goal umpires, sealing the grand final result early in the second quarter.

Ignatius Park fought valiantly to keep the deficit from deepening either side of halftime but were unable to withstand a final quarter surge inspired by a quarter-time speech from St Augustine’s Jed Rauter.

The forward fired up his teammates and then backed up his words with two final quarter goals, while Cooper Glass was just as electric throughout the match.

The College will return home to Far North Queensland confident it has the firepower to mix and match with the giants from the state’s south.

St Augustine’s local neighbours, Trinity Bay State High School, will join them in the hunt for a state title after overcoming Ignatius Park College in the junior boys’ grand final, 7.3 (45) to 3.13 (31).

Trinity’s defensive pressure can be applauded despite giving up 16 scoring shots because it was that swarming effort around the ball that smothered Iggy Park into a dreadful 19 per cent strike rate in front of goal.

Rockhampton’s The Cathedral College survived a dying minutes onslaught from St Andrew’s of Cairns to escape with a 15-11 victory in the Senior Girls decider.

St Andrew’s ended the match with multiple close range shots but could not find the major that would have sealed a trip to the Sunshine Coast.

St Margaret Mary’s College of Townsville were victorious in the Junior Girls grand final, defeated Cairns’ St Monica’s 4.9 (33) to 4.5 (29).

PREVIEW

Ignatius Park College and St Brendan’s College, the two powerhouse schools of regional Queensland Aussie Rules, go head-to-head across junior and senior divisions in a sudden death semi-final before progressing to a decider where the winner will play for the chance to represent North Queensland at the state finals in October.

CATCH UP ON ALL THE ACTION FROM DAY ONE IN TOWNSVILLE

Ryan Catholic College (senior) and St Margaret Mary’s College (junior) will represent the Townsville region in the secondary female divisions.

Every match will be streamed LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV, available with your subscription to this masthead.

For Ignatius Park to be crowned senior boys champions, as the school was in 2023, it will need to overcome the absence of more than 10 regular players due to overlapping commitments to rugby union and league.

Coach Renee Deuble said she was confident the athletic depth of Ignatius Park would keep them in good stead.

“It’s been a little bit of a headache,” Deuble said.

“But we’ve got a lot of boys at the college and we’ve been able to draw on some of the other sports as well, which has been good.

“Most of the boys are playing at club level in the seniors and we’re starting to get a bit of a strong competition. I coach women’s in the Townsville league, so I get to watch the men straight after and I think that’s really good for our school’s senior team.

“For our juniors, I think our strength is that they’re all just really sporty and willing to have a crack.”

In the senior squad, Iggy Park are bolstered by junior athletics star Ashton Leeming, who has been playing senior football for the Hermit Park Tigers this year despite still being in year 11.

The blistering sprinter set an 11.35 100m dash as a 16-year-old in April 2023 and by all accounts has only gotten quicker.

“In the seniors watch out for Ashton Leeming. He’s only in year 11, so he’s got another year to go, but he actually got king of the track for our athletics carnival on Friday,” Deuble said.

“Then in the juniors we’ve got a Palm Island boy called Sam Tamu, and he got best on ground at the last carnival for the juniors in Townsville, so he’ll be one to watch.

“He’s really strong, had never played the game before but he can take a strong mark, he can tackle and he can kick the footy about 50 meters.”

State finals will be held from Friday, October 11 to Sunday, October 13, after the finalists from the southern part of the state are finalised.
