2025-26 NTFL live stream: Watch PINT v St Mary’s in Round 5

PINT's defensive six have delivered their side an epic 12-point victory over premiership rivals St Mary's in a match that went down to the wire. Watch the full REPLAY here.

PINT have cemented their position as genuine NTFL premiership contenders in the 2025-26 season after holding off the challenge of their cross-road rivals, St Mary’s.

The clash between second and third was poised to be a big one with the green and gold outfits going all the way to final minutes of the fourth quarter with just a score between them.

But it was the Greenants, relying on what was a brilliant defensive effort from their back six, which sealed their win with a Sam Bates goal 16 minutes into the final term to win 9.10 (64) to 7.10 (52).

His goal was the only one of that final quarter in which anticipation and nerves built with PINT forced to defend their one goal lead until the breakthrough came.

It was a sealer for the momentum PINT had one since snapping a four goal run of majors for St Mary’s in the first quarter.

The visitors seemed well on top at the time with Kieran Mu scoring twice while the returning Beau Tedcastle and usual premier spearhead Jackson Calder each slotted through.

But when Calder missed one from in front for a behind, PINT were able to ease their way back into the contest and trail by just one goal at quarter time.

They maintained that momentum from there on with their defenders such as Brad Ryan, Murphy Short and Ben Smyth limiting the impact of both Calder and Luke Patterson for the match.

Their midfield also muscled their way to the fore off the back of the tap-down work of Southport VFL co-captain Brayden Crossley.

James Rowe and Archie Stevens were also heavily influential picking up plenty of possessions each as their side not only evened the ledger but went ahead with Saints failing to goal in the second.

The big man Crossley scored a very popular goal in the third term and when Rowe latched on to a Saints rebound 50, PINT would have felt justified to feel on to a winner.

Saints, meanwhile, struggled to get through their defensive foes and while Dylan Landt was around the ball as much as ever his forwards failed to convert.

It took a brilliant bomb forward from Jackson Braunthal to find Landt for Saints to snap their scoring drought and then when Tedcastle poked through the score there was a chance.

Some ill-discipline late in the third allowed both sides some fruitful but unnecessary goals, and inched the Green Machine closer.

Saints had their chances to close the gap further and had their defensive 50s but as much as PINT’s defence was strong it was their own inaccuracies that they would pay for.

And when Bates fired it through with very little time left on the clock for a two-goal gap, PINT knew they had it won on their home deck.

Southport’s Crossley said he had come north at the advice of his co-captain Jacob Dawson with the pair set for a return visit to PINT near the end of the month.

“It was a heap of fun, the weather wasn’t too dissimilar to the Gold Coast and it was a really good standard,” he said.

“Saints are a tremendous club and we understand how good they’ve been forever so probably raised the level but we had some handy players to match them.

“Jacob got me on to PINT, we’re both going to be back for a couple more games which I’m really excited about.”

Even when scores were tight heading into the fourth quarter Crossley had a smile from ear to ear relishing the opportunity to play in such a great game.

“For me these are the sorts of games I love laying in, I had a massive smile on my face at three quarter time which I think (coach) Mark Whiley was confused about,” he said.

“These are the sorts of games we want to play in, to be up here in November playing a finals like game is pretty cool, and I felt the way the way we had been playing would get us the win.

“Like we knew the threats of Calder and Patterson so for the boys to limit them to just one goal was pretty incredible, hats off to our defence.”

PREVIEW

Two targeted off-season moves to cover a key weakness have been “a big hit” already for NTFL powerhouse St Mary’s, according to coach Anthony Vallejo.

The perennial contenders have begun to come into their own in the past fortnight with new recruits making a difference as they get set for a top-three clash against PINT on Saturday.

A forward-line partner in Luke Patterson to aid usual spearhead Jackson Calder paid dividends for Saints against Tiwi and they’ll be hoping it continues to cause headaches in future clashes.

Every moment of the match will be live streamed from 5pm on Saturday by The NT News and KommunityTV as part of our season-long coverage.

Calder has finished as the league’s leading goal scorer in three of the past four NTFL seasons, but his prowess has keyed opposition sides into how important he is to St Mary’s.

This season it is new recruit Patterson who is leading the way after kicking seven goals against Tiwi to bring his tally to 10 from three games.

Meanwhile, Calder has just two but has proven a conductor attracting two or three defenders when he gets close to the ball opening space for those around him.

Vallejo said giving their three-time NTFL leading goal kicker some support was an off-season priority and the arrival of Patterson and North Ringwood teammate Jackson Braunthal was what the side needed.

“Something we’ve identified in the past couple of years is the need to give Calder a bit of a chop out,” Vallejo said.

“When we’re playing other teams they’re often double-teaming or sometimes even triple-teaming him, so we needed another quality forward up there.

“Luke and Jackson expressed interest last year and they’ve been a real big hit for us, they moved up a month before the season and have proved how keen they are.”

The Saints backline was equally as influential against Tiwi with Kieran Parnell doing a job on the Bombers’ star inclusion Willie Rioli, while Matthew Green continues to stand out on his return from a season-long injury.

Skipper Dylan Landt managed 42 disposals and was among the best alongside brother Jack Landt, who has played more on the ball so far this season.

This week the side will welcome Michael Hagan to their premier league team, who previously played in Nightcliff’s premiership winning teams.

“Green left a massive hole for us last season, he’s back this season and drives in from Tennant Creek each season to head up the back line,” Vallejo said.

“Kieran has been a star for a long time and then we had Luke Davies in his first game back as well as Will Robinson and the rest of our back six and our defence is pretty good at this point in time.

“Dylan’s the ultimate professional of our footy club, he works his backside off in training and it’s no secret how much he works on game days and he’s now coaching our under-17.5s as well.”

Next for the third-placed St Mary’s is a meeting with second-ranked PINT, a game they will want to win to further their aims of a top-three finish.

The Greenants have had a great start to the season only dropping one match, which came last time out against reigning premiers Southern Districts.

Former Adelaide Crow James Rowe has been a standout while Archie Stevens is usually a prime ball magnet.

“They’re the same as they’ve been since they came in, they’re a hard working side that works well both ways and push back in defence,” Vallejo said.

“They’re really well coached so it makes for another tough game but we’ve got a couple of good ins this week that will get their chance to play.”
