Palm Beach Currumbin SHS Head of Sport Excellence Neil Mackay talked up his school’s junior males premiership winning outfit after another bumper AFLQ Schools Cup grand final day on the Sunshine Coast.
Mackay, the long-serving PBC SHS teacher, was commenting after helping coach the side to another premiership on Sunday, beating St Laurence’s College 15-13 (103) to 2-1 (13).
“You are the best or equal to the best of any group I have seen come through and I hope you continue it for the next three years,’’ Mackay told the team.
Dylan Patterson was named best on ground in a final that PBC SHS dominated from start to finish against rivals who will benefit greatly from the grand final experience.
PBC SHS finished with three premierships - the junior males, junior females and senior males - and were beaten in the fourth grand final - by Varsity College’s senior females who crashed the party.
Relive all the action with our replays and match reports below.
CATCH UP ON DAY ONE REPLAYS FROM THE AFLQ SCHOOLS CUP FINALS
DAY THREE REPLAYS AND REPORTS
Varsity College 40 Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 20
Varsity College crashed PBC SHS’s party to clinch the cherished Schools Cup senior female premiership over their Gold Coast rivals.
In a match which went down to the final term, Varsity College won 6-4 (40) to 3-2 (20), with Zali Bettridge’s goal six minutes from fulltime extracted air out of PBC SHS’s balloon.
PBC SHS were chasing an grand final clean sweep after earlier winning the senior males, junior females and junior males.
With Ava Maher in outstanding form, PBC SHS closed the gap in the final term until Bettridge altered momentum by guiding the ball between the big posts.
Earlier, Varsity College pair Matissa Bettridge and Nyalli Milne had goaled and it is just as well because PBC had refused to go away.
Varsity College came out strongly, challenging PBC SHS in all departments.
Indeed PBC SHS probably didn’t have its first forward entry until late in the opening term, although the scoreboard did not reflect the manner in which they started.
Varsity were 2-3 (15) to 1-1 (7) leaders following a goal from Matisse Bettridge, but PBC SHS did well to restrict the lead and start afresh in the second term.
PBC SHS were quicker out of the blocks in the second quarter, with Ava Maher snaring a lovely chip pass by No.10.
But headgear wearing Varsity goal sneak Nyalli Milne struck twice, and with Bettridge adding a second major, Varsity were ahead by 21 points on the cusp of the long break.
Mountain Creek SHS V St Andrews CC (Seniors Girls Third Place)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS v Helensvale SHS (Senior Male Grand Final)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 41 d Helensvale SHS 15
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS’s senior males made it three grand final wins from three when they ground out a 26-point win over arch rivals Helensvale SHS.
PBC SHS won 6-5-41 to 2-3-15, with the vital third quarter proving the difference.
PBC SHS had earlier won both the junior males and females, and today’s senior male win was sweet after Helensvale SHS had claimed last year’s premiership.
Indeed in recent contests both schools have traded success on Schools Cup grand final day, within one school and then the other taking turns in winning the title - often by the slimmest of margins.
But the scoreboard was not close at fulltime today, with PBC SHS’s All Australian under 18 player Jed Walter ensuring there would be no Helensvale comeback by spearing through a goal from 47m out in the final quarter.
The grand final was a match for the purists.
There was not a struck match in the clash across the opening two quarters and into the third term until Cody Harrington claimed a brilliant goal from around the pack, raising his side to 4-3 and putting 20 points between the two teams.
Will Graham then added his team’s fifth goal to chisel out a 5-3-33 to 1-2-8 advantage entering the final quarter, but it had taken some effort to construct that lead.
The packs were fiercely contested, with more bumps and thumps than you would see in a dodgem car derby at the local fair.
PBC SHs’s Luke Cahill had one of the few clean shots at goal in the first half - a set shot brutally won in a contest when his tackle dispossessed his opponent.
Cahill, who was the QAFL colts leading goalkicker this season, made it count as PBC SHS edged slightly ahead by 13 points entering the vital third quarter.
Even when PBC SHs were leading by 5-3-33 to 1-2-8 deep into the third quarter, Helensvale SHS were still desperate, winning 50-50 contests.
Nudgee College v St Augustine’s College (Senior Male Third Place)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS v Hillcrest CC (Junior Female Grand Final)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 64 d Hillcrest Christian College 30
The all-conquering Palm Beach Currumbin SHS junior females stretched its winning streak to three seasons when they overcame an Ava Usher-inspired Hillcrest Christian College.
PBC SHS won a tremendous decider by 34 points, surviving a surging Hillcrest who had the first three scoring chances of the fourth quarter before PBC SHS’s Alannah Welsh kicked a remarkable goal against the run of play.
Welsh’s goal from the half back line pushed her side out to 8-4 (52) seven minutes from the final siren, and the match was all but won.
PBC SHS then finished with a flurry of goals, but the blow out on the scoreboard did not reflect the tense nature of the clash.
The best side all season, PBC SHS deserved its win after turning at the long break with a 4-3-27 to 1-2-8 lead behind them, a margin which proved the difference.
But Hillcrest were up for the challenge, with the squad’s desperation evident around the packs as they tried to wrestle their way back in the third quarter.
With Usher everywhere, Taya Reeves a focal point and energy all over the park, Hillcrest were still in the hunt and it took Welsh’s amazing, booming goal to break the clash open.
The Cathedral College v Pacific Pines (Junior Female Third Place)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS v St Laurence’s College (Junior Male Grand Final)
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS 103 d St Laurence’s College 13
PBC’s junior boys retained its AFLQ Schools Cup premiership status with the first grand final win of the day over St Laurence’s College.
In a comprehensive big match performance, PBC SHS won running away from their rivals by 90 points.
PBC SHS laid foundations for the win with powerhouse first and second quarter performances, establishing a 3-4-22 to 1-0-6 advantage, and then building on that scoreline by halftime - 7-7-49 to 1-0-6.
With left-footed Levi Rowe, Suns Academy player Jeb Moloney and state under 12 rep Kodi Wallace winning ball in the middle contests, PBC SHS’s No.6 Dylan Patterson drove forward, and first quarter goals to Cooper Miller-Ratliffe, Jackson Jarvis and Deacon Streader did not surprise.
When Laurie did threaten, PBC SHS fullback Harry Heathcote was safe at the back, rebounding possession back toward his midfield or wingmen.
PBC SHS then ramped things up even more in the second quarter, with Streader’s midfield run helping Riley Clark to three goals - and Taj Murray to one.
Clark was then swung into the ruck for the third term, feeding his hungry small men at the bounce.
But despite the loss, it was St Laurence’s Oscar Collins who produced the play of the day.
Collins did a rugby-type, ball-and-all tackle on an opponent on the centre line wing, won possession and then ran up the field to put himself in a position to kick his team’s opening goal.
A right footer, he kicked the goal despite being slightly off balance, and it was a wonderful play of the day effort by the Laurie’s student.
Despite the loss, St Laurence’s grand final appearance in the junior boys was another milestone moment for the college’s footy program that continues to grow under Sam Wiltshire.
Victory continued PBC SHS’s winning tradition on grand final day and ensured the school, with continued hard work and high standards at training, will remain a high achiever for the next four to five years.
