The $1 million Might And Power Stakes has drawn together a proven field of top class performers.

There was a field of eight runners declared for the 2000m contest. Here is a runner-by-runner analysis of every horse set to line up on Saturday.

1 – MR BRIGHTSIDE

Star galloper with an outstanding record at the track. He’s the best weight-for-age galloper in the race and this looks perfectly set up for him after drawing barrier 1. If there’s a query, he’s yet to win over 2000m and he’s had five goes.

VERDICT: Looks too good for this lot.

2 – VOW AND DECLARE

Wonderful old galloper that’s been doing it season after season but it’s fair to say his two performances this campaign have been a few lengths off his best. It should be noted, however, he was wide without cover last time.

VERDICT: Needs to improve if he’s a chance of running into the placings.

3 – KALAPOUR

Scratched last week from the Metropolitan after drawing off the track. His best performances have come at 2400m and beyond but his 2000m record isn’t hopeless. Does have an excellent third-up record (4:2-1-0).

VERDICT: Might throw some value into the trifectas.

4 – ADELAIDE RIVER

Dual acceptor at Rosehill and here. Was good first-up in the Chelmsford behind Buckaroo so that form reads well but he was plain last time out when over-racing before finishing down the track in the Kingston Town.

VERDICT: Can place off the Chelmsford run.

5 – ATISHU

Quality weight-for-age mare on her day but in the past she’s done her best Melbourne racing at Flemington and she’s been below her best in recent runs on rain-affected ground. 2000m is a tick, as is fourth-up and she gets James McDonald.

VERDICT: The hardest for Mr Brightside to beat at her best.

6 – DENY KNOWLEDGE

The likely leader but her form doesn’t scream weight-for-age. Resumed from a break in the Underwood and she didn’t have the best of runs in transit. Open to improvement and will be strong at the end of 2000m.

VERDICT: Place claims are best.

7 – JENNILALA

This is a massive step up in grade off the races she’s been running in without winning. Open to improvement off her Stocks Stakes effort but she’ll need to find a whole new level to finish anywhere near the top three.

VERDICT: Right colours, wrong horse.

8 – COCO SUN

She’s hit the line in both of her runs this preparation and this should have her exactly where they want her next week when she backs up in the Caulfield Cup. Drawn to do nothing in the run so expect her to be hitting the line again.

VERDICT: Might run into the placings but her chance comes next week.
