Mick Price doesn’t need science to tell him he has a Caulfield Guineas contender after Public Attention’s emphatic debut statement.
Price and training partner Michael Kent Jr decided to send Public Attention straight to city Saturday class instead of breaking his maiden in the country but their approach paid off.
Public Attention raced three-wide, was challenged by debut winner Ndola before finding another gear late to score by a long neck.
DNA testing often gives trainers a better idea of what distances suit young horses but Price said the striking grey looks a Caulfield Guineas type.
“I want him qualified for the better races,” Price said.
“He’s a horse that we’ve not done a DNA (test) on but without a DNA (test) I would be going to the Caulfield Guineas with him.
“To win a Group 1, I think he needs to be a Caulfield Guineas horse.
“He’s either a Coolmore horse or a Caulfield Guineas horse and I think he’s a Guineas horse.”

Price won the 2017 Caulfield Guineas with $101 shot Mighty Boss while bookmakers installed Public Attention as a $21 chance to win the October 12 event.
Jockey Ethan Brown might have also found his Caulfield Guineas mount after drawing high praise from Price, who said he initially had to sell the young rider to Public Attention’s owners, which include the powerful Coolmore Stud operation.
“Ethan is the most underrated Group 1 jockey in Victoria, I reckon,” Price said.
“People only say that when they win but I justified putting him on to the Coolmore group by saying, ‘this kid is a Group 1 jockey’.
“That’s how he rides. He’s a good judge.”
