The desire to relax and enjoy being around racing led popular Cranbourne trainer Mick Bell to regain his licence with only one horse in his stable.

Bell endeared himself to punters along the eastern seaboard of Australia through the deeds of his stable star Jungle Edge, who won 13 races and more than $1.5 million for the stable, including stakes races in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

“I think I’ve had all my luck with Jungle Edge and I don’t think I’m going to find another one,” Bell said.

Bell had his last runner in May last year, deciding to shut down his stable rather than lose money in the industry he loved.

But he decided to renew his trainer’s licence to potter around with six-year-old mare Everett while he worked on his new business.

Bell said he had started to put his enjoyment of country racing to good use, driving a float and saddling horses for trainers that are required elsewhere.

“I’m just going to have one horse in work,” Bell said.

“I’ve started up a race day service. I take people’s horses to the races and saddle them up.

“I also do the jockey comment videos for the trainers as well. I’m just going around the edges.

“They can call me at short notice. I love all the meetings like Burrumbeet, Hanging Rock and those places.

“It’s just going to be a hobby unless it really fires.”

Bell, who also works casually for leading trainer Ciaron Maher at Cranbourne, will take Everett to Ararat for a race on Tuesday.

Bell bought Everett from his new business’s best customer, fellow trainer Enver Jusufovic, and the six-year-old has finished third in both her starts for her new owners.

Everett will drop back to BM56 grade for her Ararat assignment.

“I think she’ll nearly get the money but who knows?” Bell said.

“She’s a rating 58 running in a Benchmark 56 so she should be in it right up to her ears, but that doesn’t mean she’ll win.”

Everett is an $8 chance to give Bell a winning return to training.
