One horse can be all it takes to get a jockey into the spotlight and Ryan Hurdle might have found the one to take him to the heights in 2025.

Hurdle has been aboard emerging talent Revelare in his past four starts in which the Robert Hickmott-trained galloper has shown himself as one of the likely improvers of the year.

Revelare won a Rating 64 race at Seymour in December before posting two Saturday city wins at Sandown, shattering a course record jumping to Benchmark 78 grade on February 1.

Revelare is set to start as an odds-on favourite to post his fourth straight win in Saturday’s TAB We’re On, another Benchmark 78 race over 2000m at Saturday’s Flemington meeting.

The New Zealand-born jockey said getting the ride on the developing galloper was simply a matter of good fortune.

“It’s been a dream run,” Hurdle said.

“I was just fortunate that I was in the right place at the right time at the Bendigo jumpouts one morning and got the leg over him.”

Revelare came along at the perfect time for Hurdle as the jockey fought to carve out a niche in the Victorian riding ranks after making the move from South Australia a year ago to join his partner, promising apprentice Jaylah Kennedy.

A hefty suspension incurred in a New Zealand Group 1 race preceded a serious injury that set back Hurdle’s task to build relationships with owners and trainers to secure rides.

“I had a fall at trackwork and the first person on the scene was actually Rob,” Hurdle said.

“It wasn’t even one of his horses but it was outside his barn.

“I fractured a couple of vertebrae in my back and I had a good six months or so off but I’ve been riding consistently since last July.

“I’m just starting to build a little bit of momentum and forge some relationships with more prominent trainers.”

Diligently working to maintain his weight is one of Hurdle’s priorities along with riding as much trackwork as possible in order to give himself every chance to succeed on the tough Victorian circuit.

Hurdle said riding a prospect like Revelare made the task easier.

“The best motivation is a good horse sometimes,” Hurdle said.

“The horse is a very good incentive. He’s not a horse I want to go to the races to ride after wasting until I’m cactus because that’s when you make mistakes.

“I’ve been hitting the gym and working harder than ever because you never know where a horse like this might take me.

“It’s too ruthless over here to not take the opportunity by the horns.”
