Comeback galloper Globe ready to resume in the Group 3 Moonga Stakes at Caulfield

Fun-loving galloper Globe is set to have a good time when he returns from an injury-enforced break in the last race of Saturday’s Caulfield Cup meeting.

Racing’s high stakes make it a serious business for nearly all participants, except horses like Globe.

Globe sees the racetrack as a playground, a place to get out and do his favourite thing – running fast.

The six-year-old thoroughbred has many of the tricks of a six-year-old child, starting when his handlers are preparing him for a track gallop or a race.

He won’t stand still at saddling time, preferring to either wander forward or back in his stall, before making life difficult for anyone trying to get other tack on him such as a bridle or bit.

Turning his head from side to side to avoid the bit is one of Globe’s favourite tricks before he finally takes it in his mouth, allowing the rest of the reins and bridle to go on.

Then there’s Globe wandering wherever he wants to go when he’s supposed to be walking quietly around a parade ring or mounting yard.

Tuesday morning’s trick was a sudden sharp left turn into a gap, giving his temporary strapper a tough time to get Globe back on the right path.

“He’s just a pest,” Nick said.

“He’s such a big horse, and he knows it, and he just goes wherever he wants sometimes.”

Caulfield Cup tips and runner-by-runner guide

It’s often said the eyes are a window into the soul.

It’s certainly the case with Globe, his big kind eyes accurately illustrate a horse bereft of malice, just a big fella that likes to have his fun.

“He’s a real character,” Michael Kent Jr, who trains Globe in partnership with Mick Price, said.

“He’s a very energetic, high nervous energy type.

“He’d be like a teenager with ‘AD triple-H D’ and he likes to keep active.

“He’s quite calm at home but he gets very excitable. He wants to get out there and get his job done.”

Globe was touted as one of the brightest prospects of last sprint when blitzing his rivals in a race at Sandown in May last year.

However, a chain of misfortune that began in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes at The Valley last September kept the son of Charm Spirit to only one start in the last year.

“He’s had a few things go wrong,” Kent Jr said.

“He went to The Valley and he got atrial fibrillation and we see that time and time again with racehorses.

“As a one off, it’s not an issue, so we hope it’s not a one off.

“He ran pretty well first-up last prep then he went down to the water walker but he’s a big horse, crashed into the water walker and had a shoulder injury.”

Globe has snuck into the field as the first emergency for Saturday’s Group 3 Moonga Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield after the withdrawal of handy four-year-old War Machine on Thursday.

Kent Jr said Globe would need the run but giving the horse a pleasurable experience back at the races was the main aim for Saturday.

“We’re very much of the opinion that he needs the run first-up and it’s not until he gets third-up, close to peak fitness, when he can go up in trip and roll along and break the field up,” Kent Jr said.

“It’s just about having a nice day out and pulling up well.”

As long as Globe gets to hit top speed out on the track at Caulfield, he’ll have a good day out.
