Trainer Bjorn Baker declared Paradoxium is “as good, if not better” than his two previous Magic Millions 2YO Classic winners after the exciting colt smashed his rivals at Wyong on Wednesday.

Paradoxium surged into $3.50 favouritism for next month’s Gold Coast main event with an eye-catching 2¾-length romp in the $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (1100m).

Baker won the same race last year with O’ Ole before it went to Queensland to capture the $3m feature while he also completed the double with Unencumbered in 2013/14.

The Warwick Farm conditioner is confident Paradoxium can continue on a similar upward trajectory following his statement performance.

“It was special,” Baker told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“I know Jason (Collett) was pretty excited and this is what it’s about, we are in the Magic Millions now and I am hoping it is third time lucky.

“I have won this race twice before and they’ve gone on to win it and I think this guy is as good, if not better than all of them.

“It’s very exciting and I thought Masvingo (stablemate) was good too, she has picked up more money and hopefully we can get her there too.”

Paradoxium rarely had a moment of peace in front with the Peter Snowden-trained Seeiaye to his outside, ensuring a quick tempo.

But Paradoxium, well backed into $2.35 favouritism, quickly shook off his rival as he turned for home and put a space on the competition early in the straight.

The exciting son of Extreme Choice surged away to score from the Michael Freedman-trained Mystical ($6), which came from last in the run.

Baker’s Masvingo ($5) was a half-length away in third.

“I liked the filly (Masvingo) better the first prep but he has just come back and matured,” jockey Jason Collett said.

“He is starting to fill into his frame nicely. He is an upward trajectory.

“His trials were great leading into this and to do that today, he copped some pressure early and soaked it up, and kept up with it so it was good.”

Baker is likely to use the BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 27 as a springboard into the Magic Millions 2YO Classic at the Gold Coast on January 17.

Seeiaye drifted from $4.50 equal favouritism out to $11 for the 2YO Classic with Mystical shortening from $11 into $8.

Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes winner Shiki is the $4.50 second elect.

The Three Hundred survives protest for return win

The Three Hundred had to survive a protest to capture Wednesday’s $150,000 Magic Millions Wyong 3YO and 4YO Stakes (1200m) following prevailing in a thrilling three-way go at Wyong.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained gelding was first past the post in the Gold Coast Magic Millions lead-up before a protest was fired in by connections of runner-up King Of Roseau and his jockey Tom Sherry.

The Three Hundred ($6.50) made his run in the three-wide line and was involved in a tight battle with Spywire ($2.40) to his inside as King Of Roseau ($2.90) launched his challenge along the fence.

There was contact between The Three Hundred and Spywire over the concluding stages as King Of Roseau made his run to their inside but Stewards felt the contact wasn’t enough to change the result.

The Three Hundred had been first-up from a break in the feature event after he was last seen running in a Coffs Harbour Cup over a mile in August.

Bott had suspected the six-furlong test may have been too short for the son of I Am Invincible but the four-year-old was up to the task first-up under the urging of jockey Tim Clark.

“You could tell in the run Tim (Clark) had plenty of horse underneath him so I was really encouraged by the way he was travelling into it and I thought he was some hope,” Bott said.

“He thought he would dig in late and it was good to see him get his head in front.”
