HAWKESBURY INSIDE MAIL
RACE 1: 4YO+ MAIDEN HANDICAP (1500m)
GWENDIE (3) is a Ross McConville-trained mare named in honour of the late, great Gwenda Markwell who trained the dam, Mandylion, who was once runner-up in the Angst. Gwendie was good at all three runs of the first preparation. Will get further so 1500m suits first-up. Mandylion finished in front of Dixie Blossoms in that Angst and here we have Dixie’s daughter, AL FLORES (5), going around and sure to go close for her trainer Ron Quinton. Savabeel daughter STING IN THE TAIL (4) is better than her CV reads.
BET: Gwendie to win, quinella 3,5, trifecta 3,4,5 (boxed).
RACE 2: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1500m)
MAHOGANY GIRL (3) is one of only 22 foals in Australia by the USA iron horse Mshawish and is from the same family that left the great Schillaci. Mahogany Girl is a 6YO but only raced four times for three placings and a comprehensive last start win here at home. C’MON MATE (1) has only managed one win from 21 starts but he has placed 11 times, seven of them are seconds. On top of that, he has placed at Hawkesbury three times, the last one was behind Rolling Magic. SUSPECT (4), a $1.9 million yearling back in the day, has been running well in better races.
BET: Mahogany Girl to win.
RACE 3: CLASS 1 PLATE (1800m)
KAHRABA (8) is a blue-blood of ‘classic’ proportions. Her father Dundeel won the Triple Crown while her third dam is Travel Light who won the 1986 Queensland Oaks. Kahraba has had her last two starts for Denim Wynen and they really do point to a horse ready to peak now. Makes a lot of appeal with the 52kg. THINK ROMANCE (9) has five thirds from seven starts. One third was to Firm Agreement then the next one was behind Powers Of Opal. Almost ‘have’ to put her in. Brad Widdup-trained local PHYSICIST (1) is third-up and ready for the 1800m – big time.
BET: Kahraba each-way, exacta 8 to beat 9 quinella 8,9, trifecta 1,4,8,9 (boxed).
RACE 4: MAIDEN PLATE (1300m)
STAR OF PARIS (14) was a $130,000 Karaka Yearling purchase. The Kris Lees-trained filly turned in an impressive and encouraging debut, running a close second in a 1200m Maiden at Newcastle. Extra 100m can’t hurt. Newhaven Park’s mare GLORY (9) is a half to Thousand Guineas winner Odeum and $1.1 million winner Goodfella. Same family as Gytrash too. Trials like a horse bound for better. CARNEGIE HILL (4) has blinkers first time and more importantly, been gelded. Trials are a million times better than the look at first glance.
BET: Star Of Paris to win, Glory and Carnegie Hill each-way, box First 4 No.s 1,4,8,9,14.
RACE 5: COLTS, HORSES & GELDINGS BENCHMARK 64 (1300m)
BINDI’S CHOICE (5) is a handy mare at her best. She was within six-lengths of Magic Time in the PJ Bell, sixth in a Championship Heat at Kembla and more recently was an eye-catcher behind Spring Lee and Confess Our Dreams. This is the ‘easiest’ race she has been in for a while. MAGIC SHADOW (7) beat Rolling Magic a few runs back and was much, much better than an 8th of 9 at Kembla last start. SHELSTEIN (8), the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling sale topper ($550,000) warrants respect for obvious reasons as a last start/first-up winner. Phenom is on a hat-trick.
BET: Bindi’s Choice to win, Daily Double 1st Leg (5), 2nd Leg (6).
RACE 6: SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1100m)
KING OF DRAGONS (8) was spelled after finishing with two behind him in a strong midweeker on June 26 on a Heavy 8 at Warwick Farm. The Gary Portelli-trained colt has been nothing shy of super impressive, winning back to back trials at the Farm. APEX (2) has been gelded but the pedigree is too good not to mention; third dam is Mannington, fourth dam is Bint Marscay. Form’s not bad either bearing in mind he was third on debut to the subsequent Caulfield Guineas winner, Private Life. Trialling well. HEAVENFIELD (11) and REGIMENTAL COLOURS (12) are big players.
BET: King Of Dragons to win (best bet), exacta 8 to beat 2.
RACE 7: MIDWAY BENCHMARK 68 (1000m)
STRAAND BEAUTY (6) hasn’t put a foot wrong in his five starts. This preparation alone he has finished third at Rosehill, second to Manos at the Farm and then that easy, all the way win at Wyong in a good looking Maiden. This was a good race for the horse to begin with but it got better when he drew 3. RANTAN (11) sent out some very encouraging signs that she was getting back to best when a close up fourth last time. A fast run 1000m will suit her right down to the ground. MR ROCK IT (5) has never missed a place in five runs at the 1000m.
BET: Straand Beauty to win, quinella 6,11.
