Brad Waters’ best five roughies to back at the 2025 Warrnambool May Carnival

A two-year-old on debut and a veteran galloper returning from a spell are among Brad Waters’ five roughies to follow during the three-day Warrnambool May Carnival.

TUESDAY

MISS ELLANEOUS (Race 5 No.11): Usually roughies are a bit longer in price but the Henry Dwyer-trained filly could ease out in the lead-up to her debut on Tuesday. However, her sole jumpout this time in was full of merit as Miss Ellaneous wanted to compete throughout and did her best work late. Would be no surprise if she fired first-up.

WEDNESDAY

DASHING (Race 8 No.4): He is a $34 chance to win the Wangoom Handicap first-up but it would be no surprise if he produced an upset. Dashing has a solid first-up record and closed well in his trials leading up to this. He’s yet to miss a place over 1200m and a good speed on would suit him.

CIELAO (Race 3 No.8): SA trainer Michael Hickmott has aimed a few runners at the Warrnambool carnival and Cielao should be respected as a rough chance to break her maiden. She trialled twice before a much improved outing when narrowly beaten at Murray Bridge fresh. Jamie Melham going on in a big pointer for punters to follow.

THURSDAY

SIR ROCKFORD (Race 6 No.10): This bloke is going better than his form looks on paper. He gave a start but worked home solidly at his first two runs this time in but just found 2400m too far under 61.5kg at Sandown third-up. He’s back to 1700m for this and improves on soft ground. He could produce a shock result.

BERMADEZ (Race 8 No.2): Surprised Bermadez has come up at such big odds given he appears to be aimed for this specific race. Bermadez is now an eight-year-old but boasts an impressive first-up record with four wins from eight attempts and loves soft ground. There has been nothing wrong with his recent jumpouts so don’t let him get under your guard.
