One Rockhampton rocket didn’t manage to hit paydirt down south, so it’s time for another one to be deployed at Caulfield on Saturday.

Clinton Taylor’s stakes-winning sprinter Chinny Boom will have her first outing for new trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman in the Tour d’Horse Sprint (1100m).

Rockhampton trainer Taylor said owner-breeder Mark Pascoe was keen for Chinny Boom to run for Taylor in Melbourne.

But the Rockhampton horseman couldn’t spend time away from his young family and his large team of horses at home in the central Queensland beef capital of Rockhampton.

It was a similar situation with Astapor, the three-year-old colt who Taylor trained in Rockhampton before he was sent to Joe Pride in Sydney for a tilt at southern races.

Astapor has since been unplaced in a pair of races in Sydney and another at Caulfield.

During the Queensland winter carnival, Chinny Boom won the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes in brilliant fashion at Eagle Farm after some had questioned whether the mare could run a strong 1200m.

Ex-Queenslander Moody was in the Sunshine State during the winter carnival with his team which included Group 1 Australian Oaks winner Autumn Angel.

“Peter (Moody) has his horses with (Eagle Farm trainer) Desleigh Forster during the winter and we had a chat and that’s how it came about that Chinny Boom went to Peter in Melbourne for the spring,” Taylor said.

“The owner told me I could take this mare down, but with a young family and so many horses at home, I simply couldn’t.

“Hopefully this mare gets a bit better luck down south than what Astapor has had.

“It will be interesting to see how she measures up in her first run in Melbourne.

“There are January Magic Millions races and other big races at home in March that she is eligible for, so if she doesn’t measure up down south she will probably come home for them.”

With four wins from five first-up assignments, Chinny Boom can be dynamite when fresh.

Taylor thinks the 1100m of Saturday’s race will be right in the five-year-old mare’s sweet spot.

“Everyone always seemed to be suspect on her at 1200(m) but the way she won the Helen Coughlan, she put that theory to bed,” Taylor said.

“But I do think that 1100m and fresh is a good recipe for her.

“I think it’s very important for her to get some give in the track.

“If she gets some give in the track, that’s when she really excels.”

Chinny Boom, who has won nine of her 17 starts, will be ridden by Luke Nolen at Caulfield on Saturday.
