Adelaide jockey Teagan Voorham rides former Lloyd Williams horse Hype to North Queensland Cups gold

Two hit-and-run missions to Queensland have been hugely profitable for jockey Teagan Voorham, who has combined with Tasmanian trainer Aiden Nunn to win a pair of northern cups.

Teagan Voorham is the South Australian jockey riding a Tasmanian horse, formerly owned by Lloyd Williams, that is dominating the North Queensland cups circuit.

Voorham answered a SOS from professional polo player-turned-trainer Aiden Nunn to ride Hype in the Rockhampton Cup last month and backed it up again on Saturday in the Mackay Cup to combine for their second $150,000 feature in the space of a month.

The obscure connection was formed through a Tasmanian polo background and is proving to be a lucrative one.

In her first visit to North Queensland, Voorham rode the tricky Mackay track like a seasoned veteran and said Hype was able to do the rest with a devastating turn of foot.

“I have been pretty fortunate really, to have the luck go my way, but they have been a couple of good hit-and-run missions,” she said.

“I don’t care where the winners come from, as long as you can get them.

“It was a Wednesday morning and I was driving to Mount Gambier and Aiden sent me a message when we hadn’t spoken for a while.

“I looked at what horses he had in the nominations, thinking he might have something in Adelaide, but they were in Queensland so I thought it was a strange question.

“He said he’d pay my way to come over and ride the horse, so I got on the phone to my manager and he had a really good opinion of how the horse was going.

“I don’t mind going up there, it is always good to do something different and the exposure never hurts either.”

A spell now beckons for Hype, who has proven to be a bargain buy for Nunn off Cups King Williams, who bought the horse to Australia from Europe.

Nunn follows the Australian polo circuit and bases himself out of Queensland in the winter months.

A home state cups assault now beckons for Hype, with Voorham keen to be a part of it.

“His long-term plan is the Tasmanian cups, so his plan was to spell him and start fresh down there,” Voorham said.

“If Aiden is keen to have me on, it is my old home base, so I would be keen to ride the horse down there for sure.

“He is a really nice horse, he just needs to learn how to settle a bit, which he wasn’t too bad with at Mackay because they set a reasonable tempo early.

“The more he learns to settle back in the field, the better he will be.

“He has a really good turn of foot, the main concern with the barrier we had was the fact we didn’t have the 600m straight we had at Rockhampton.

“He was just too good for them really in the end.”
