Matt Dunn warns Tribeca Star is a ‘blowout chance’ in The Kosciuszko

Matt Dunn would dearly love to win The Kosciuszko after the recent passing of his grandmother, and has warned not to discount the outsider of his two runners.

As he attempts to win the $2m The Kosciuszko in honour of his late grandmother, Matt Dunn has warned punters not to discount the rougher of his two runners in betting markets.

Dunn’s 99-year-old grandmother Norma – the woman who got him into racing – passed away last month and the trainer said it would be a fitting tribute if one of his horses could score Saturday’s rich race at Randwick.

Dunn has $5 second pick Boom Torque, who has won more than $800,000 in prizemoney, and $26 pop Tribeca Star.

He insists Tribeca Star is a far better chance than his odds suggests after finishing third at Doomben last start but just finding the track too firm.

“It certainly would be nice to win a race like this (in honour of Dunn’s grandmother), the timing is perfect,” Dunn said.

“Both the horses are in good shape and hopefully both will stand up to be counted on race day.

“Absolutely, there is a chance of a blowout with Tribeca Star.

“His runs have been great, his last start going in was better than it looks as the track was quite firm that day with hot and windy weather.

“As the day went on, the track dried out and he doesn’t appreciate that sort of ground.

“He is going to get a more favourable surface in Sydney you would assume.

“At his best, absolutely he can win that race.”

Boom Torque, who sizzled home from near last to score a $1m race on Gold Coast Magic Millions day in January, was most recently seen finishing third in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill.

Dunn feels certain that if the breaks go his way, he can zoom home to soar to the riches of The Kosciuszko.

“He has got an extraordinary turn of foot when races are run to suit,” Murwillumbah trainer Dunn said.

“This race does look as though it’s shaping up as a good speed race.

“There will clearly be good tempo, there always is in this race.

“He would probably like it drier rather than wetter, there is a little bit of rain forecast but hopefully that doesn’t eventuate.”
