Golden Rose favourite Broadsiding on track for Group 1 feature following strong trial effort

Trainer James Cummings has been delighted with dual Group 1 winner Broadsiding in the build up to Saturday week’s Golden Rose at Rosehill Gardens.

Godolphin’s boom galloper Broadsiding delivered the perfect tune up for Saturday week’s Group 1 Golden Rose – and a likely showdown with gun stablemate Traffic Warden – with an eye-catching final trial at Hawkesbury on Tuesday.

The Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes and JJ Atkins winner is yet to make an appearance this spring but impressed in his last public hit out over 1000m.

Broadsiding only had one runner behind him early in the hit out before leading jockey got him to the outside and let him go through his gears.

The Godolphin colt closed off strongly over the concluding stages to finish 1-3/4 lengths off heat victor Mitch Beer’s Alicia Roma, with the winner clocking 58.35 seconds (last 600m of 33.20).

Broadsiding is the $3.50 Golden Rose favourite from last Saturday’s Run To The Rose winner Traffic Warden ($4), with boom colt Storm Boy ($4.50) on the third line of betting.

Trainer James Cummings had taken Broadsiding to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday for an exhibition gallop and has been ‘delighted’ with the dual Group 1 winner’s progress ahead of his return.

“He has put on nice condition and has grown quite naturally,” Cummings said.

“It hasn’t been too much so that it might be detrimental.

“As for improvement, I have just kept it really simple with the horse and he is coming to hand nicely.

“We are not out there pushing him along and expecting to see improvement, you will find out when we do.”

‘It’s why I get so emotional’: Another Wil’s special family connection

Cummings is keeping his options open for Broadsiding in the spring with Group 1s in Sydney and Melbourne available for the colt.

The son of Too Darn Hot is a $3.50 favourite for the Caulfield Guineas and holds a nomination for the Cox Plate, where he is a $9 chance, while Sydney’s King Charles III Stakes could also be considered.

His first up performance will give Cummings a guide on what will come next.

“We will get through the Golden Rose first,” he said.

“The Caulfield Guineas is high on the agenda but it’s not the only race that has been discussed.

“We will get through the end of the month and next month we will have a better idea where we are going.”

Traffic Warden, a runner up in the Sires’ Produce Stakes in the autumn, surged into Golden Rose contender with a strong Run To The Rose victory last Saturday over Storm Boy and Anode.

Cummings indicated the colt was now a leading contender to fill the racing and breeding powerhouse’s The Everest slot if he can match the effort in the Golden Rose.
