FIVE TO FOLLOW

I WISH I WIN (5th – Race 9)

In a word, ominous. Never looked like winning the Group 1 Moir Stakes but the superstar finished like a Group 1 Manikato Stakes and Everest-winner-coming. I Wish I Win travelled sweetly back in the field, tracked HAYASUGI in the run, and let rip in the straight. I Wish I Win recorded the fastest last 800m (43.81sec), 600m (32.99sec), 400m (21.95sec) and 200m (11sec) sectionals on the Valley card last Saturday.

HAYASUGI (2nd – Race 9)

Found one better on the day in the Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) but great return from the Blue Diamond winner. The tough and tenacious filly, expertly handled by trainer Clinton McDonald and jockey Jamie Kah, looks primed for a big spring carnival, bring on the $2m Group 1 Manikato Stakes on September 27 at The Valley – AFL Grand Final Eve.

SAKIMA (3rd – Race 6)

Bailed up behind a wall of fillies in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes and only got warm the last 75m where she rattled into second. Been up a little while, runs spaced since first-up Sydney win in July, but no reason why she cannot get the chocolates again in a similar race.

DEEKAY (5th – Race 10)

Melbourne Storm fans have a lot to cheer on the rugby league field and potentially now also on the racetrack in September as Deekay caught the eye at The Valley. The Anthony Chibnall-trained Deekay, who carries Storm colours complete with lightning bolt, settled last outside the eventual winner MISS ARIA and finished just strongly. Miss Aria benefited from an inside run, stellar steer from Blake Shinn, whereas Deekay had to try and loop the field.

INDEPENDENT ROAD (4th – Race 8)

Stranded in No Man’s Land first-up in the run and forced to cart the field up as classy winner PERICLES chased down the runaway leader BUFFALO RIVER, who dropped out to run last. Independent Road stuck to the task boldly to be in a photo for third.

FORGIVE

PUBLIC ATTENTION and EPIMELES (5th and 6th – Race 7)

Inside draws proved costly as the fancied pair became tangled up in a skirmish rounding the home bend, tightened for room and dropped out. Picked up again to the line but forget they went around.

ATTRITION (7th – Race 8)

Ran as well as he could second up from last with a big weight. On track and should be ready to peak third or fourth up with even luck. Posted the quickest last 1000m, 800m and 600m in the race.
