A recent surge of winning form continued for jockey Reece Jones at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has found it tough since coming out of his apprenticeship but will head into the new season with plenty of momentum after another metropolitan winner aboard One Aye in the James Squire Benchmark 78 Handicap (1800m).

Saturday’s success was Jones’ fourth city victory in recent weeks, including last weekend’s feature race win aboard Jojo Was A Man in the Listed Winter Challenge Final at Rosehill Gardens.

“It’s been tough this season but things have started to pick up and hopefully the momentum will continue when the new season starts next week,” Jones said.

“I’m just keeping my head down and I’ll continue to work hard and make the most of my opportunities.”

Jones was combining with One Aye for the second time and they went one better than when they last teamed up in June.

One Aye ($16) came from back near last, storming down the outside section of the Randwick straight to knock off the $2.45 favourite Mascaret with Monfelicity ($7.50) rounding out the placings.

“She’s done a marvellous job,” co trainer Paul Jones, who trains in partnership with him mum Barbera Joseph and brother Matt Jones, said.

“She was having her 14th run of the prep and has been racing since December last year.”

One Aye, a six-year-old mare has done plenty of travelling this campaign having contested the Narooma Cup, Moruya Cup, Bega Cup, Canberra Cup, Wellington Cup, Wagga Wagga Cup and the Narrandera Cup.

Saturday’s win was the mare’s seventh win from 43 starts and took her earnings to more than $430,000.

“She’s been a great little horse for the stable when you think we only paid $50,000 for her,” Paul Jones said.

“She’s taken us on a great ride running in so many country cups and to get a Saturday metropolitan win is a great result for her and the owners who have been wonderful supporters of the stable.”
