Godolphin superstar Broadsiding made a statement in the Group 2 $400,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) that he has the three-year-old classics at his mercy this autumn carnival.

Broadsiding is already a three-time Group 1 winner and Cox Plate placegetter but, remarkably, he seems to have returned an even better version of himself.

Trainer James Cummings, who completed the feature race Rosehill double after winning the Silver Slipper with Beiwacht, admitted as much after the race.

“We’re pretty excited about having him back and we’ve been confident all over the summer that he’d come back in good shape,” Cummings said.

“But I wasn’t mucking around with him. I ensured that he was ready to go in a race that he needed to get the wrap back on him in a race like the Hobartville.

“I’d love to see him derive good benefit from this and build up nicely for the Randwick Guineas in a fortnight which I’m sure he will.

“I love seeing the horse back like that, he’s a smashing colt and yeah, it’s going to be an exciting journey ahead for him.”

Broadsiding ($2.90 favourite) gave jockey Zac Lloyd his fourth winner for the day when he dashed clear at the 250m and won easing down by nearly a length from the fast-finishing Swiftfalcon ($11) with Aeliana ($9.50), the only filly in the field, a half neck away third.

Lloyd was warming the saddle for champion jockey James McDonald - who rides Romantic Warrior in the $30m Saudi Cup early on Sunday morning - and described Broadsiding as “very special”.

“He’s a very valuable colt to the team and yeah, he’s getting better with age,” Lloyd said.

“The race was never in doubt, never in doubt. Once he’d begun like that, I had to give him a bit of a squeeze to just get in front of the runners underneath me, and once I got there, he just fell right back asleep.

“At the 500m, I just went through my gears, but he didn’t really need it. He knows his job.”

Lloyd started the day with a hat-trick of wins on Rush Attack, Exit Fee and Step Aside, then closed out the meeting with Time To Boogie.

“This is the first time I’ve ridden five winners - anywhere,” Lloyd said. “I’ve won four races on the one day a few times never five until today.”

Broadsiding began quickly and showed surprising early speed to settle just behind the leaders which Cummings revealed Godolphin’s form expert Dominic Beirne had forecast during the week.

“Dominic Beirne was all over it - he thought with a horse fresh up that he could be there. The map looked good from Wednesday night and it’s worked out well,” Cummings said.

“And Zac Lloyd has just delivered. The pressure goes on him when James McDonald is away and Zac has done a great job here on Broadsiding just like he did on Traffic Warden last year.

“It’s good to see Zac rising to the level because he’s had a big day here and yet when the big race came around, he was still there to deliver.”

Broadsiding, who was the third stakeswinner of the day for his sire Too Darn Hot after Shanwah (Autumn Classic) and Tropicus (Zeditave Stakes) won at Caulfield, improved his race record to six wins and three placings from 12 starts for nearly $2.3 million prizemoney.

Move paying off as Morgan secures first Group victory

Cummings confirmed Broadsiding will go to the Group 1 $1 million Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Royal Randwick in two weeks.

The Godolphin maestro is chasing a third win in the Randwick Guineas after his previous successes with Kementari (2018) and Hallowed Crown (2015). They both won the Hobartville leading into their Randwick Group 1 triumph.

“It was important for him to have a really good baseline of fitness because that Randwick mile can be a testing one on a two week turnaround and so he should be ready for that,” Cummings said.

“He’s a stylish winner of two big, two impressive 1600m wins at Randwick before and I think he’s going to enjoy getting back there.”

Swiftfalcon’s effort to come from last and claim second was outstanding, as was Aeliana’s closing third.

Tyler Schiller, rider of Swiftfalcon, said his three-year-old’s run was “phenomenal”.

“Swiftfalcon gave the winner and the best three-year-old colt of the year a good head start but ran him down quite strongly. His last bit he was improving, it was a terrific return,” Schiller said.

Jason Collett was equally enthusiastic about Aeliana’s competitive effort against the best male three-year-olds in training.

“It was a really good run,” Collet said. “She just struggled around the turn on the back of the winner who got away from us but then late I was very happy with her.”
