They may be roughies, but Queensland trainers Bevan and Richard Laming will have their stable stars gunning for an upset in Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas.

It’s not every Saturday when a Queensland trainer has a runner in a Group 1 race in Sydney but father-and-son team Bevan and Richard Laming have managed to catapult two stayers into the $750,000 Rosehill Guineas.

“They’ve done a good job to get there,” Richard Laming said about his star three-year-old colts Savour The Dream and Our Benefactor running in the 2000m race.

“The barrier draw for one of them is only fair (Savour The Dream, gate 10) but good for the other one (barrier five). You can’t have everything.”

TAB has posted three-time Group 1 winner Broadsiding ($1.95) as the hot favourite behind Swiftfalcon ($5) and Victoria Derby champion Goldrush Guru ($5.50) for Saturday’s Rosehill Guineas.

Aeliana, the only filly in the staying contest, is $7.

Brisbane-based jockey Martin Harley will ride Savour The Dream ($126) while Zac Lloyd will be on board Our Benefactor ($51).

Despite the massive gap in bookmakers’ odds between the pair, Harley was happy to be riding Savour The Dream, who finished 12th out of 15 in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington three weeks ago.

Our Benefactor came sixth out of eight runners last-start in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 8.

“I’m looking forward to getting on Savour The Dream again,” Harley said.

“I do think he’ll be much better at going the Queensland way around (at Rosehill on Saturday).

“If he can get in from that sticky barrier, I’m pretty sure he can run the distance and I give him a solid place chance.”

Harley said although he found it tough to split the Laming colts, he was “definitely on the right horse” for Saturday’s major.

He believed the Michael, John and Wayne Hawkes-trained Swiftfalcon, who finished third in the Randwick Guineas behind Kiwi star Linebacker and Broadsiding, was the major threat in the Rosehill Guineas.

“He’s a massive horse,” the Irish jockey said.

“I saw him in the paddock at Randwick the other day and I think the extra distance will suit him.”

Laming said he was confident that Our Benefactor could last the 2000m and he would improve fitness-wise from his Randwick Guineas effort.

“I thought it was a good run. He got a long way back and made up good ground,” Laming said.

“He’s drawn five (in the Rosehill Guineas) so he’s going to get a very good run on Saturday, hopefully midfield, one-off the fence.

“I’m very happy with the horse. I think if he can get the distance he should be thereabouts.”
