Beany Panya takes her first steps after spinal surgery while Blake Spriggs continues to recover in the ICU

Injured jockey Beany Panya has miraculously already taken her first steps since undergoing spinal surgery while it’s hoped Group 1 rider Blake Spriggs will have a breathing tube removed on Tuesday.

Panya and Spriggs have been in Canberra Hospital since last Friday after both riders were involved in an ugly fall at Moruya.

Racing NSW confirmed Spriggs remains in the intensive care unit where he has been intubated with chest and abdominal injuries however it’s hoped the breathing tube will be extubated on Tuesday.

He has already undergone successful surgery on a fractured arm and clavicle.

Panya underwent spine fixation surgery on Sunday while the neurosurgery team have been happy with her progress.

“Her partner Maddie and friends are with her and she took a few steps and walked about 15m on Monday,” Panya said.

“She wants to go home already but is in good spirits.

“There were fractures to her T6 and T7 and she got a rods and four screws but no brace.

“They will monitor her and give her time to rest. She is going to be in there for another couple of days still.”

The fall occurred as the field turned for home with Spriggs’ mount Blesstas coming down first.

Panya’s mount The Boomerang, which was racing on the outside of Blesstas, became unbalanced and also fell.

The remaining two races on Moruya’s eight race card were abandoned.
