Star jockey Tommy Berry wasted no time announcing his return to Sydney racing when booting home the Chris Waller-trained Llanddwyn in his first ride back from a spell at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Berry hadn’t ridden since Tatt’s Tiara Day on June 27 in Queensland and endured a gruelling eight-day fitness boot camp in Thailand to get him fit for a return to riding.

After a false start when Influential was scratched at the gates a race earlier, the gun hoop helped Llanddwyn score a terrific last to first effort in the ATC Members Peter Simpson Handicap (1200m).

“I am just really happy with the way this filly has matured,” Berry said.

“She is well bred and for her to get a Saturday win is very good for her page.”

Llanddwyn ($7.50) didn’t have a runner behind her as the field rounded the final turn with Berry electing to fan widest at the top of the straight.

The daughter of Deep Field went through her gears before striding clear late to score by two lengths from the James Cummings-trained Jewellery ($2.15) with Matt Dale’s Acappella Sun ($18) a half-length back in third.

“It’s pretty blustery today so she got a bit of cover out of that wind and it was a confident ride from Tommy,” Waller said.

“He got her out into clear running and rounded them up.”

Llanddwyn has been racing in terrific form this preparation and had been a winner at Canterbury Park coming into her latest assignment.

She has built a competitive record of three wins and three placings from 11 starts.

“She has come a long way in her three year old year,” Waller said.

“She has continued to take steps and here we are in the middle of winter, running for really good prizemoney.

“This filly has done a great job for Sir Owen Glenn and the team.”

Waller is likely to push on into the early part of next season with Llanddwyn before sending the filly for a well-earned break.

He’s hopeful of claiming some valuable black type during her four-year-old season.
