Being an elite hockey player is no easy feat with Hockeyroos striker Rosie Malone revealing the painful process she had to go through to release built up tension in her quad muscle.

Malone, 26 is no stranger to horror sporting injuries or pain.

She almost severed her finger during the trans-Tasman series pre-Commonwealth Games and a few months ago played the Hockey One final with a broken nose and two black eyes – proving she has a high pain threshold.

But the latest treatment to release tension in her quad muscle, which Malone shared on social media, left the star writhing in pain.

The Tokyo Olympian described the treatment as feathered acupuncture.

In the video the physiotherapist can be seen inserting and withdrawing the same needle from the quad muscle multiple times.

Malone is seen clutching onto the bed, wriggling in pain and holding her breath.

She captioned the video shared on Instagram: “Why does it low key look like I’m having an exorcism”.

As the treatment progresses Malone says: “Oh my God, there is a tear rolling down my cheek, that’s bad that one”.

The physio responds with ‘breathe’.

“No I can’t,” Malone replies.

“Can you relax,” the physio says.

“No,” quips Malone.

“I feel like there is blood pouring out.”

The physio stops and assures her there is no blood pouring out.

In one reply to one of the many comments on the video Malone said her quad muscle is “all healed now”.

It is good news for the Hockeyroos are in Perth preparing for the Perth International Festival of Hockey – which starts on April 6.

The Hockeyroos will play China, Japan and Australia A across six match days.

The Kookaburras will also be competing in the pre-Olympic hit out.
