Brisbane State High School’s chances of winning this year’s GPS Basketball premiership have suffered a major blow after a close loss to The Southport School.
TSS rebounded from last week’s fourth-quarter let-down against Churchie and overcame injuries to several key players to beat State High 95-83 on their home floor.
State High were favoured heading into the clash after several dominant performances to start the season but coach Kris Robinson said his team didn’t handle the pressure well.
“It was a physical contest and our younger team learned a lesson that they need to play through contact,” he said.
The win puts a major dint in State High’s hopes of contending alongside Churchie and St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, who they are yet to face this season.
However, it was an impressive win from the Anthony Petrie-coached TSS team, who pushed Churchie all the way last week before letting their lead slip in the last quarter.
The victory now gives them hope of still challenging for a premiership, with TSS now needing to beat Gregory Terrace and hope Churchie lose one game.
Petrie said it was a great result and turnaround after last week.
“Really high quality game when you remember they are only high school students playing,” he said.
“I was proud of the way our boys kept belief in what we were doing and what we thought would be effective on both ends of the floor.
“A few times we got down double digits and managed to show some toughness on the defensive end to hang in the contest.
“Very competitive game played in great spirit, again, a game worthy of students being there supporting their school and a real credit to the boys who were out there competing today.”
