GPS First XI Team of the Week following round 8 action

The Southport School were on the cusp of a GPS First XI premiership, but a host of players from rival schools still made our round 8 Team of the Week. Story here.

The Southport School will be playing for the premiership when they confront Brisbane Grammar School away on Saturday.

On a weekend which saw Ipswich Grammar School young gun Sohaan Sharma (91) hit the bullseye for the second time this season, TSS came from behind to pip Churchie.

TSS now have a stranglehold on the title after a tense win over the improving Churchie on the Village Green during Saturday.

GPS FIRST XI QUIET ACHIEVERS OF SEASON 2024

Rookie batsman Jason Campese, who has been kept in cotton wool batting down the order this season, anchored the innings with 33 not out (17 balls) after Churchie spinner Henry Hillier had dismissed TSS captain Riley Johnson (55).

Campese, a naturally attacking batsman, blazed his runs in no time at all as the steady Gabriel Leitch watched on at the other end.

Churchie’s excellent summer continued, spearheaded by top order batting aces Angus Storen (50) and Rupert Bignall (61), and with Jayden Draper’s brisk 34, Churchie would have been pleased with 221. TSS bowler Ted Waterman was up to his old tricks - bowling 6-1-11-2.

But TSS are a great team and if one misses out, another steps up.

Sohaan Sharma was among the runs again - scoring 91 for IGS.
Sohaan Sharma was among the runs again - scoring 91 for IGS.

IGS’s Sharma was a blazing batting star with a glittering 91 - just weeks after hitting a thunderous 103.

You know it is a spectacular knock when a batsman hits more sixes than fours, and Sharma’s innings - littered with six sixes - was electric.

We can’t wait to see him back in the GPS First XI again next season.

Sharma’s innings helped deliver his side 266 runs.

The IGS bowlers then took over. Cibulka (48 and 2-21) continued to sparkle, while William Pamenter’s pace caused no end of concern. He claimed three wickets.

Off spin bowler Luke Harper was attacked early, but stayed the course to take three wickets.

Nudgee’s Findlay Jones scored a nice half century while Matt Fielding fired off a quick 39 as their side successfully defended 198.

Those boys were Nudgee’s best with the bat, and in support of them the Nudgee bowlers and fielders rallied around to dismiss BBC for 141.

Billy Connellan led the charge with 3-35, but it was a group bowling effort as Angus McLean (1-17), rookie spinner Spencer Green (2-39), Jacob Turner (1-32) and Karmichael Dee (2-11) came to the fore.

BBC’s Blake Armstrong makes our Team of the Week for his left arm orthodox bowling - not his batting. He claimed 4-28, but even then Nudgee’s batting was good enough to reach 198.

Armstrong was also BBC’s top scorer with 31.

Terrace players had an early afternoon after they blasted through BSHS’s to dismiss them for just 78.

Like Armstrong of BBC, Terrace batsman Theodore Bacalakis makes our Team of the Week for his bowling (8-2-12-3), and is joined by Harry DeSouza (3-8).

James Eustance was excellent for Terrace again, bowling tightly and making 21 not out after BSHS had thrown a spanner among the works by having Terrace 5-50.
