Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen brings new confidence to Australian PGA at Royal Queensland

Fresh from securing his PGA Tour card, Danish sensation Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen is eyeing off Australian PGA glory at Royal Queensland.

McIlroy claims overall tour honours

Danish star Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen has returned to Royal Queensland full of confidence for a second tilt at the Australian PGA Championship after going toe-to-toe with Rory McIlroy in Dubai.

Neergaard-Petersen, 26, was in the final group with world No.2 McIlroy in the final round of the DP World Tour Championship less than two weeks ago.

And while he didn’t win the event, his tie for third helped him secure a PGA Tour card.

Neergaard-Petersen also gained new belief playing alongside eventual runner-up McIlroy, with the Dane’s final round of 68 including an eagle and three birdies in his final five holes.

“I’ve always had the belief that I’m capable of competing in the biggest events, but to do it there with Rory on that stage … it gives me a great amount of confidence,” he said.

“The last month or so has been crazy to say the least. Obviously I’m really happy with where my game’s at.”

Neergaard-Petersen finished in a tie for eighth at the co-sanctioned event at Royal Queensland last year.

It was his first tournament after stepping up full-time to the DP World Tour from Europe’s secondary tour.

“I really loved it down here last year, so I’ve actually been forward to coming down to Australia again for quite some time,” he said.

“I have come very far. Looking back just 12 months ago, it was my first event last year of my first full season.

“It’s been quite a ride, and I’ve enjoyed every part of it, and I’m really excited for the future.”

Neergaard-Petersen expected some “aggressive” golf at Royal Queensland from a star-studded PGA field.

“The golf course in general is quite open off the tee, so we’ll be seeing guys try to be quite aggressive off the tee, because it’s, it’s not that penalising if you do happen to miss,” he said.

“If I can go out here this week and just be fully committed to all the shots I hit, whatever the result might be, I’ll be happy enough.”
