Kye McWaters shoots crazy 61 stableford points at Maroochy River Golf Club in return to competitive golf

A Queensland golfer - who recently had his handicap reactivated at 30 from his schoolboy days - entered the record books in an eye-popping return to competition by shooting 61 stableford points.

A young Sunshine Coast electrician has short-circuited golf’s record books by playing 25 strokes better than his handicap for a crazy 61 stableford points.

Kye McWaters, 23, had his eye-popping day out on Monday at Maroochy River Golf Club in his first competition as a member in eight years.

His handicap was recently reactivated at 30 from his schoolboy days in Gladstone, yet there had been no hint of him shooting so low in social games with mates over the past year at Maroochy River.

“A few people have had a go at my handicap but I’m just stoked about the 77 and I do want to get it down to scratch if I can,” McWaters said.

“I was super nervous on the first tee in my first comp for eight years and three-putted that hole.”

McWaters doesn’t want flak about his handicap to ruin his best golfing experience.

“I’ve never played that well ever before and my short game just clicked,” he said.

His amazing card included two five-pointers, six four-point holes and eight three-pointers to swamp the 46-48 point level that is regarded as an elite single stableford score.

McWaters drove the green on the 268m par four 15th hole, coolly sunk a 2.5m putt for eagle and signed for a five-pointer.

He even had room for a one-pointer by three-putting the par-three green to follow.

McWaters was a bit self-conscious during his five-over-par round of 77 and accepted some playful banter.

“My playing partners did say ‘you won’t be on 30 for very long’,” he said.

You have to feel for Maroochy River regulars like Steve Maybury. He compiled an excellent 43-point score for third but was 18 points off top spot.

Online research turned up a 52-point round being described as “beyond fabulous”, but a 61 is out of this world.

Five strokes have been chopped from McWaters’ handicap for his next round on Friday and it’s sure to tumble even further.
