Adam Scott says a return to the “top of the rankings” is driving him as he embarks on his 25th year as a professional golfer.
Scott. 44, has started the year on a good note, shooting a five-under 68 in the opening round of the PGA Tour’s season-opening event, The Sentry in Hawaii.
“I was very happy with that, first round back out,” the Australian star said.
“It was a slow start, but they were the harder holes for the day in the wind.
“I settled down and found my rhythm, and made a couple putts, missed a couple putts, but overall (it was) very solid seeing I’ve had a bit of a break.”
Former world No.1 Scott, who trails leader Tom Hoge by four strokes after the American shot a nine-under 63 on the Kapalua Resort’s par-73 Plantation layout, said he was yet to achieve all of his goals in golf.
“I don’t think it’s unrealistic, given the way I’ve played certainly the last six or eight months, to get myself back up toward the top of the rankings again,” said the 2013 Masters champion, who is currently at 18 in golf’s official world rankings.
“I don’t think it’s unrealistic to think I can still achieve a couple big victories out here that I would like, and that’s really what drives me.”
Scott’s fellow Queenslander Jason Day opened his new season with a three-under 70, while the other Australian in the field, Sydney’s Cam Davis, shot an even-par 73.
