Adam Scott broadcasts round at the Maleny Golf Club to the world

Adam Scott put a tiny Sunshine Coast course on the world stage as he shared his round on Instagram with golf fans lapping up some rare live sport.

Adam Scott came out of golfing isolation on Friday, not for a drive down Magnolia Lane at Augusta but to show off tiny Maleny Golf Club to the world.

For sports fans starved of live sport, the champion golfer's own idea to "broadcast" his fun nine-hole match with club pro Wayne Perske on Instagram Live (@adamscottofficial) from 8am was lapped up like the Masters.

The livestream was eye-popping exposure for a club largely run by volunteers and manager-pro Perske amid the beauty of rolling fairways, gums, boxwoods and beech trees in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Scott said with a grin that it was his first use of Instagram but it won’t be his last on course after an engaging 80 minutes of golf, chat and banter with mate Perske.

“That was my first ever contribution to Instagram but a fun idea we came up with since I’ve been home with not a lot to do,” a relaxed Scott said.

“I wanted to promote that you can actually get out on course, an area where I live and the really fun story out here at Maleny Golf Club that I stumbled across.”

Perske was two-up after two holes and Scott said to a huge following worldwide that he was in danger of being “towelled up” unless he found something when one-down on the final tee.

“This old broken-down pro routine from Wayne doesn’t work...he can hold his own and he was maybe pretty friendly to let me off at the last,” Scott said.

Scott made par at the last but Perske missed a 4m par putt of his own to leave the match all square.

Juniors can still play 18 holes for $5 and a lucky few enjoyed the prized treat of playing with Scott when he meandered through a few extra holes after a surprise visit on Tuesday.

“That's the type of bloke Adam is ... a humble guy playing golf with some lucky kids and now giving our club some brilliant exposure across Australia and the world,” said Perske, who won a pro event in Japan in 2006.

“When you have the 2013 Masters champion praising volunteers for the job they've done building and maintaining our little course, that goodwill is really giving back to the game.

With a laugh, Perske added: “Scotty flew it over the back of the 10th green the other day with driver and that's 330m away so he was showing off.”

“This puts us on the map...we’ve had a massive amount of feedback from around the world.”

Scott said the par-68 layout that was created by a volunteer army really appealed to him.

“The passion of the membership has given a real heartbeat to this club,” Scott said.

“They deserve a lot of credit and I just want people to come and experience it with a game.

“There are a lot of great courses on the Sunshine Coast and I like to kind of talk up golf here a bit and give a little background of where I grew up playing.”

His chatty stroll to camera certainly resonated with followers from the US, Europe and Australia hitting the feed with regular comments.

“Man, this makes me miss golf so much”, “Please do this again” and “I fist-bumped with you in 2015 and still haven’t washed my hands” were just three to go with a smattering of heart emojis from female fans.

Scott said the unscheduled break because of the coronavirus crisis had one silver lining.

“It’s starting to become like the longest break I’ve ever had in 20 years as a pro,” Scott said.

“It’s been a hectic last few years for me and my young family so spending this time with my family, albeit in odd circumstances, has been really good for me.”

Scott said everyone in golf was looking forward to a unique November Masters at Augusta.

“I’ve never been there in November. It could be quite cool and play quite long which is scary but, as players, we all want the opportunity to play the Masters no matter when it is.”

Scott said his commitment to the Australasian Tour was unwavering even with no dates yet set for the Australian Open at Kingston Heath or the Australian PGA at Royal Queensland.

“Absolutely. That position doesn’t change for me but I kind of want everyone in golf to make the right decisions given the circumstances we are in,” Scott said.

“In the big picture, if we miss a couple of tournaments, and we’ve missed a lot already (worldwide), they’ll hopefully be back next year.

“Let’s all do our part and, certainly, for the people who are doing it really tough let’s pitch in and we’ll get there.

The energetic Perske, 45, and Scott knew each other from amateur golf days in the late 1990s but a link as strong is with Perske's artist wife Vanessa.

As Vanessa Spragge, she captained a Queensland schoolgirls' golf team at the same time that Scott did the schoolboys' team.

That connection led to Scott sitting for a wonderful portrait which became a 2014 Archibald Prize entry ... the golfer in the fabled Masters green jacket and wearing Aussie flag board shorts.

Scott has a beachside home on the Sunshine Coast which has been his family base during isolation with wife Marie and their two kids.

Maleny only went from 12 holes to a full 18 in February. Surprise, surprise ... the decorated visitor is already the course record-holder with a six-under-par 62 and that round started with a double bogey.

There was no silverware on Friday or any suggestion that “Adam v Wayne” will be akin to Tiger Woods v Phil Mickelson for $12 million in Las Vegas in 2018.

It’s for fun and another sign of the good bloke aura that Scott radiates so naturally.

Under the strict restrictions for golf during the coronavirus crisis, there’s no gallery, one player per golf cart, only a group of two, cut-down pool noodles filling Maleny’s holes and no license for a cold beer after the round to prevent milling around.

The shutdown of tournament golf has forced the world No.6 to reshape his 2020 golf schedule with a mid-June restart in the US and new dates for the PGA (August 6-9), US Open (September 17-20) and the Masters (November 12-15).

Leading women's golfer Hannah Green has just discovered that the title defence of her Women's PGA Championship has been shifted from June to October 8-11.
