There’s a new competition in town and it’s set to change the game for school sport on the Gold Coast.
Gold Coast Sport will take over the pre-existing interschool sport competitions from 2024 and provide new opportunities to students.
Miami State High School teacher and GC24 co-coordinator Nicola Borgatti is confident the program will benefit all participating schools.
“We wanted to create a competition that would bring more schools and more athletes together,” Borgatti said.
“Gold Coast Sport will do that and allow more students to be involved.”
HOW WILL IT WORK?
There will be 15 participating schools, all state high schools, from the Gold Coast region. Those 15 schools have been divided into clusters of North, South and Central as follows:
NORTH - Pacific Pines SHS, Helensvale SHS, Foxwell SSC, Coombabah SHS Upper Coomera SC
CENTRAL - Southport SHS, Benowa SHS, Nerang SHS, Varsity College, Miami SHS
SOUTH - Palm Beach Currumbin SHS, Elanora SHS, Robina SHS, Merrimac, St Michael's College
Between February and July, there will be five ‘sport days’ played per region, at which schools will compete against one another. The proposed calendar for each cluster’s sports days can be found below. After the conclusion of the fifth sport day, the top two teams of every age group in every sport will be invited to compete against the successful teams in opposing clusters. This finals day is planned for mid August. Full schedule:
