Amateur lip-readers have had a field day with the man dubbed “the most Australian football fan ever”.
The man’s response couldn’t have been more Australian after he noticed cameras zoomed in on his face during the Socceroos’ clash against France on Wednesday.
With his face broadcast around the world, he appeared to mutter: “Jesus, we’re on he f***ing tele.”

The clip has been shared on news sites from the UK to Canada with commenters enjoying the caught on camera moment.
“That’s the look of someone who told their partner that they were away on business,” one joked.
“Or told their boss they were off sick with Covid,” another added.
6:30PM UPDATE: $28 MILLION SILVER LINING TO SOCCEROOS LOSS
The Socceroos may have been smashed 4-1 by France but just making it to Qatar helped deliver an unexpected $28 million bonus for Football Australia.
Financial accounts lodged by FA on Wednesday afternoon, obtained by The Australian, show the governing body is in its best shape since the pandemic hit at the start of 2020.
Revenue reached $88.6m for this year, well above the $60m FA had forecast when its financial year began in the second half of 2021.
“We budgeted on the basis that we wouldn’t qualify (for the World Cup), just in case we didn’t. The additional revenue we have got as a result of qualifying is a bonus,” said FA chief executive James Johnson.
Qualifying for the tournament has resulted in at least $US10m ($15m) in prize money and appearance fees paid to FA by world governing body FIFA, of which about 40 per cent will go to the 26-man Socceroos squad. Much of the rest of the uptick in revenue is a result of the increasingly popular, and far better performing, Matildas women’s national team, which will play at home in the 2023 Women’s World Cup next July and August in a tournament shared with New Zealand.

Japan is one of the biggest firmers in World Cup betting markets after shocking the world with a 2-1 victory over Germany to sit second in Group E.
The result effectively puts the Samurai Blue in a three-team battle to qualify for the knockout stages after Spain humiliated Costa Rica 7-0.
Japan has been wound in from $251 pre-tournament to an $81 chance to win the Qatar World Cup by TAB.
Serbia is the popular outsider with punters ahead of a daunting opening Group G match against tournament favourite Brazil.
The 25-ranked Serbians have attracted bets of $3700 at $81, $2800 at $81 and $3500 at their current quote of $67.
The market has reacted savagely to first-up losses from contenders Argentina ($6.50 out to $9) and Germany ($11 out to $21), while Denmark drifted from $31 to $41 after opening its campaign with a 0-0 stalemate against Tunisia.
One optimistic Socceroos fan parted with $350 on Graham Arnold’s team to bring the World Cup back to Australia after their 4-1 loss to France.
Only Qatar, Tunisia ($501), Iran and Costa Rica ($751) are longer odds than Australia ($351).
Argentina’s loss to Saudi Arabia caused Brazil to firm from $5 to $3.75, while England ($7.50) and Spain ($7.50) have been wound in from $9.
“It’s been a bit of a difficult start to the tournament for some of our punters, who have liked the favourites,” TAB’s Andrew Georgiou said.
“Argentina being beaten the other day was a huge shock but the fact Germany were knocked off this morning too has seen plenty of multis go by the wayside.”

However, an unlikely rivalry has now emerged ahead of the crunch clash.
That’s after A-list actor Ferrell was sent a very cheeky message by England goalkeeper Ramsdale.
And it prompted a hilarious reaction from the Elf star, who threatened to get back at Ramsdale with a dirty protest.
Ferrell dealt the first blow when he appeared on Roman Kemp’s Capital Breakfast radio show.
The part-owner of MLS outfit LAFC said: “I think it’s going to be a slaughter. USA 3, England 0.”
But Ferrell was left stunned when he was played a video message sent in by Ramsdale.
The Arsenal stopper said: “You’re a great actor and a hero of mine.
“I love watching your films but when we play your nation on Friday you’ll be the worst actor in the world.
“Elf will be on the shelf and it will be a little less Anchorman and more w*****man. Take care pal.”

1.50PM UPDATE: WHY IS BELGIAN STAR WEARING MASK?
Belgium’s substitutions just after halftime in this morning’s win against Canada caught the eye a little more than usual.
One of the players coming on to offer fresh legs for Roberto Martinez’s men was defender Thomas Meunier, who plays for Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund.
And unlike anyone else on the pitch, Meunier was wearing a black mask.
He looked like a character from a new Marvel film, but Meunier did well to play in the World Cup at all. He suffered a fractured cheekbone in Dortmund’s clash with Hannover 96 earlier this season and needed surgery.
He won’t be the only player at the tournament wearing a face guard – South Korea star Heung-min Son will wear a mask when he steps onto the field to play Uruguay after suffering an eye socket injury while playing for Tottenham in the Champions League.
Ironically, Meunier was handed a yellow card after catching Canada’s Junior Hoilett in the face with his arm while challenging for a high ball in the second half of Belgium’s 1-0 win.
EARLIER: ‘F*** CROATIA’: COACH’S PASSIONATE PLEA REVEALED
Canada coach John Herdman told his players they were “going to go ‘F’ Croatia” after they were unlucky not to come away with at least a point against World No. 2 Belgium.
The Maple Leafs had 21 attempts on goal to Belgium’s nine and dominated much of the territory yet paid the price for a missed penalty in a 1-0 defeat.
Michy Batshuayi, deputising for the injured Romelu Lukaku, netted the only goal after Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies missed what would have been Canada’s first World Cup finals goal from the penalty spot.
Herdman rallied his players after the match in a passionate on-field address, reportedly telling them: “I just told them they belong here. And we’re going to go and ‘F’ Croatia next. It’s as simple as that.”
Herdman said he could not fault Canada’s endeavour but conceded they had missed a chance to add to the growing list of early upsets in Qatar.
“I’m proud of the performance,” Herdman said.
“But you need to take three points in your first game. We had an opportunity tonight to be top of the group, that was the mission, and we missed it.
“But I’m proud of the performance. These lads showed that they can live on this stage and I think they made the fans proud and made them feel that they belong here.”

11.48AM UPDATE: KANE TRAINS AS ENGLAND SWEATS

England have received a major injury boost as captain Harry Kane trained with the rest of the squad ahead of Friday’s clash with USA. The Three Lions were left stressing on Kane’s fitness last Monday after the Tottenham superstar went to hospital for a scan on his ankle.
The star striker felt discomfort after the 6-2 win over Iran and was sent for tests by manager Gareth Southgate as a precaution. But the 29-year-old took part in full training with the rest of his international teammates at Al Wakrah Stadium.
The England captain stood out against Iran as he bagged two assists.
But Kane was taken off after 76 minutes after being clattered while concerned fans watched from the stands.
The Spurs hero was spotted hobbling and had his ankle strapped in the media mixed zone after the clash.
But Southgate insisted Kane is “fine” and revealed he took him off as a precaution.
The England boss said: “I think Harry’s fine. It looked a bad tackle but he carried on in the game.
“We took him off really because we felt it was a moment we could do that.
11.04am UPDATE: ‘WEIGHT OF A NATION’ ON STAR’S PENALTY MISS

Canada coach John Herdman backed the decision to let Alphonso Davies take a crucial missed penalty after the North Americans suffered an agonising 1-0 defeat to Belgium on Wednesday.
Davies squandered a golden chance to fire Canada into a shock lead over the 2018 World Cup semi-finalists in a pulsating Group F battle.
The Bayern Munich star has little experience of spot-kicks, and saw his tame ninth-minute effort comfortably saved by Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
A disappointed Davies did not stop to speak to reporters after the defeat. Herdman said the Canadian team’s “brotherhood” had trusted Davies to take the kick in what was Canada’s first World Cup game since 1986.
“When you’ve got an 85 million dollar player with that sort of swagger, let him pick up the ball and take it,” Herdman told reporters.
“It was a big moment. We were waiting to get that first goal. I’m proud of Phonzy, he’s picked the ball up.
“It’s a big moment, he’s carrying the weight of a nation and 36 years of waiting.” The penalty miss proved costly, with Canada left ruing a series of other missed chances as Belgium escaped with a 1-0 win.
Nevertheless English coach Herdman, the first man to coach a team at both the men’s and women’s World Cups, said he was proud of his side’s performance.
“I can’t complaint too much, sometimes it’s your night and sometimes it’s not. “They showed tonight that they do belong here,” Herdman said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been back.
“I’m sure they (the fans) walked away proud and feeling like we are football nation.” Canada will now aim to get positive results against Croatia and Morocco in Group F to have any chance of progressing through to the next round. Croatia and Morocco fought out a 0-0 draw earlier Wednesday.
“I think this group stage is wide open now after the Croatia-Morocco result,” Herdman said.
However Herdman acknowledged that after Canada’s impressive opening performance, their opponents would be better prepared.
“Teams will know us now. The cover’s off, the teams will know what we do. Now we’re coming up against Croatia who have a midfield three to die for,” he said.
“If we can be more ruthless in attack we’ll get something out of these games. The group is wide open.” Canada captain Atiba Hutchinson insisted all was not lost as his team looked ahead to their game against Croatia on Sunday.
“It’s a difficult game but we showed today what we are capable of doing so we’ll go in there with the same mindset again and hopefully get a better result.”

Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne was left bemused after being named man of the match in Belgium’s 1-0 victory over Canada.
The Red Devils were lucky to escape with three points against the plucky Canadians, who are ranked 39 spots below world No. 2 Belgium.
Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies missed a penalty which would have given Canada a shock 1-0 lead before striker Michy Batshuayi netted the game’s only goal.

Midfielder de Bruyne, regarded as one of the world’s premier footballers, appeared stunned to be named the best player on the pitch.
The English Premier League dynamo was far from his usually influential self as Canada enjoyed a lion’s share of territory and had almost three times as many attempts on goal as one of the tournament’s favourites.
Post-match, de Bruyne said: “I don’t think I played a great game. I don’t know why I got the trophy. Maybe it’s because of my name.
“We didn’t play well enough as a team, we didn’t find any solutions and we started really bad.“ In the second half, when we started to get through their pressing there was more space but I don’t think we played a good game today, me included, but at least we found a way to win.”
Belgium are next in action against Morocco on Sunday, when Canada take on 2018 runners-up Croatia.

Denmark midfielder Thomas Delaney is out of the World Cup after picking up a knee injury during his team’s opening goalless draw with Tunisia, the country’s FA announced on Wednesday.
“We’ll miss him, both on and off the pitch,” said coach Kasper Hjulmand in a statement.
“Our other players are ready and we have a strong squad for the coming matches.”
Delaney, who plays his club football with Sevilla in Spain, will miss Denmark’s remaining Group D fixtures against world champions France and Australia.

Heartbroken World Cup pundit Nadia Nadim was forced off air on ITV after hearing her mother had been killed by a truck. The 34-year-old striker, who was born in Afghanistan but represents Denmark’s national team, is currently in Qatar working for the broadcaster.
She was part of ITV’s panel for the coverage of Denmark’s goalless draw with Tunisia on Tuesday.
But Nadia, who currently plays for American club Racing Louisville, suddenly had to leave the studio during the game.
Tragically, the former Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain forward’s mother was killed while she was on air.
Nadia said her mother was hit by a truck while she was on her way home from the gym on Tuesday morning.
The devastated pundit described her as “a warrior who had fought for every inch of her life”.
“Words cannot describe what I’m feeling,” she said.
“I have lost the most important person in my life and it happened so sudden and unexpected. She was only 57.
“She was a warrior who had fought for every inch of her life.
“She didn’t give me life once but twice, and everything I/ we are is because of her.
“I have lost my home and I know nothings gonna ever feel the same. Life is unfair and I don’t understand why her and why this way.
“I love you and I will see you again.”

MORNING UPDATE: BEER BAN THREATENS TO SPILL INTO 2026 WORLD CUP

Spurned World Cup sponsor Budweiser will demand their pound of flesh from FIFA after the late beer in-stadium U-turn.
Owners ABInbev agreed an estimated £95m (approx $170m AUD) deal to continue as the official beer suppliers to the 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico – up £30m (approx $53m AUD) from the Qatar agreement.
That was on the basis of a 48-team and 80-match tournament across the three countries.
But it is expected Budweiser will now demand a massive reduction in lieu of taking legal action against Fifa for breach of contract.
And the blow will be eased further when Fifa confirms early in 2023 that the opening phase will now consist of 12 groups of four teams rather than the planned 16 groups of three, meaning a 104-match World Cup.
That will offer the brewery a further 24 matches with exclusive sales rights at the stadium plus the likelihood of extra official Budweiser-catered Fan Festivals across the three host nations.
Fans were set to be able to drink £12-a-pint beer (approx $21 AUD) in the venues at Qatar 2022 before tournament chiefs reversed on their promises at the 11th hour.
That leaves Budweiser with thousands of crates of beer that cannot be sold.
So the company vowed to give all the leftovers to the winning country at the World Cup.
It means supporters can only purchase alcohol at the official FanZone.
Furious, regular fans are being forced to pay almost the same amount as the richest visitors to Doha.
The USA team are among the VIPs staying at the Marsa Malaz Kempinski Hotel in the swanky Pearl district.
A bucket of six 33cl cans of the official tournament tipple is on sale in the hotel’s sports bar for £51.20 – so £8.5 per can, or 26p per cl (approx $16 AUD per can).
In the FanZone, it’s £11.62 for a 50cl can – so 22p per cl – in much less luxurious surroundings (approx $20 AUD).
8.40AM: YOUNGEST SCORER SINCE PELE FOOTBALL’S NEXT BIG THING
Teen talent Gavi is set for global stardom after he became the youngest World Cup scorer since Pele in Spain’s 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica on Wednesday, his coach Luis Enrique said.
Gavi scored Spain’s fifth goal with a first-time finish from Alvaro Morata’s cross that crashed in off the inside of the post to become the third youngest scorer in the tournament’s history at 18 years and 110 days.
“It’s the best of my dreams, I never imagined this,” said Gavi. “I’m delighted to be achieving this.” It capped a man-of-the-match display from the Barcelona youth product who linked brilliantly in midfield with fellow Camp Nou-based teenager Pedri, 19.
And Luis Enrique is sure he has on his hands a player who will become one of the best in the world.
“He’s a unique player, a very different player because … he’s 18 years old but he has the personality of an experienced player,” he said.
“We’re happy to have him in the team and we think he’s going to be one of the stars of world football.” And the demanding coach still expects Gavi to improve.
“I hope he will go and play every time better and try to be aggressive with the ball and without the ball,” said Luis Enrique, who added that Gavi “needs only a bit of poise and calm at times.” Gavi was the pick of a bunch of supremely gifted young players who contributed to a stunning performance in which Spain did not give up a single corner or shot on goal while enjoying more than 80 per cent possession.
He linked up particularly well with Pedri, who provided the pass for the opening goal by Dani Olmo.
“I’m very happy to win it and delighted to be MVP. We played a great game, well done everyone,” said Gavi.
“Pedri and I are very good friends off the pitch and on the pitch there is not much to say, he’s a spectacular player and it’s very easy to play alongside him.”

7.13AM: SWISS CAPTAIN ON ARMBAND CONTROVERSY

Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka said Wednesday his side did not have to copy Germany’s mouth-covering protest against FIFA’s stance on rainbow-themed armbands.
Germany lined up for their team photo before a shock 2-1 defeat to Japan making the gesture after they abandoned plans for skipper Manuel Neuer to wear the “OneLove” armband following threats of on-field disciplinary action by FIFA.
“I don’t think we need to do anything as the Swiss team. We need to respect the rules and concentrate on our football, that’s all I intend to do,” captain Xhaka told reporters ahead of his team’s Group G opener against Cameroon on Thursday.
“We’re here to play football and not hand out lessons to anyone.” A representative of the Swiss football federation had previously said Xhaka “would have liked” to wear the armband but would instead wear one provided by FIFA with an anti-racist message.
The Swiss were one of seven European teams whose captains were to wear the armband in support of LGBTQ people at the tournament in Qatar, where homosexuality is illegal.
Germany’s football association (DFB) said on Tuesday it was examining the legality of FIFA’s threat, after some of the teams came under fire at home for failing to take a stronger stand against the stance of world football’s governing body.
Netherlands midfielder Davy Klaassen, whose country was one of the seven to back down, later praised the Germans for their protest.
“That’s a nice variation on the armband. It was a good way to do it,” he told reporters.
Klaassen’s team take on Ecuador in their second Group A match on Thursday.

Portugal’s press officer refused to allow Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes to answer questions about Cristiano Ronaldo in English and turned the FIFA translator off.
The shocking incident took place during the pre-match press conference ahead of the Portuguese national team’s World Cup opener against Ghana.

A British journalist was given the floor and immediately apologised for asking in English.
But the Portuguese press officer immediately shook his head and insisted Fernandes will not answer in English.
The reporter, though, kept at it as he asked the playmaker if he’s concerned about the state he will find United when he returns after Ronaldo’s exit and the club being put up for sale.
The 28-year-old responded in Portuguese but the FIFA translator was shockingly turned off.
Portugal’s World Cup preparations have been affected by Ronaldo’s fallout with the Red Devils after his bombshell interview with SunSport columnist Piers Morgan.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner ripped the club to shreds from top to bottom during a tell-all sit-down.
Porrtugal manager Fernando Santos and several of his players have been asked about their captain’s controversial statements.
Fernandes has previously snapped at an interviewer after being asked about his star teammate.
5.12AM: DENMARK CLARIFIES FIFA QUIT STANCE
Denmark has moved to clarify reports it could quit FIFA.
Earlier, there were reports Denmark was planning talks with fellow UEFA members over potentially quitting FIFA.
They were one of seven nations, including England and Wales, planning to wear One Love armbands before backing down over the threat of yellow cards.
But it emerged on Thursday morning Denmark’s grievances were with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“Some media have made the misunderstanding that DBU will withdraw from FIFA,” DBU head of communications Jakob Hoejer told Reuters in a WhatsApp message.
“That was not said at the press conference. We’re critical and not satisfied and we’ll not vote for the present FIFA-president (Gianni Infantino). We will discuss further actions with our Nordic and European colleagues.”
Danish FA (DBU) chairman Jesper Moller was reported to have said Denmark were considering leaving FIFA and are ready for talks with UEFA’s 55 member nations, which includes England.
The DBU delegation expressed their “anger” at the way FIFA threatened sporting sanctions for the seven captains planning to wear the One Love armband.
Denmark will not formally support FIFA chief Gianni Infantino in his bid to be re-elected as president.
Moller said: “There are presidential elections in FIFA. There are 211 countries in FIFA and I understand that the current president has statements of support from 207 countries.
“Denmark is not among those countries. And we’re not going to be either.”
On leaving FIFA, he said: “It is not a decision that has been made now. We have been clear about this for a long time. We have been discussing it in the Nordic region since August.
“I’ve thought it again. I imagine that there may be challenges if Denmark leaves on its own. But let us see if we cannot have a dialogue on things.
“I have to think about the question of how to restore confidence in FIFA. We must evaluate what has happened, and then we must create a strategy – also with our Nordic colleagues.”
Alongside Denmark, England and Wales, Germany, France, Belgium, and Switzerland had all planned for their captains to wear One Love armbands in Qatar.
The armbands promote inclusivity and LGBTQ+ rights, with same-sex relationships illegal in Qatar.
But the seven skippers were warned by FIFA that they faced a yellow card as a “minimum” punishment for wearing the armbands.
DBU chief CEO Jakob Jensen said: “On November 21, England asked for an emergency meeting with FIFA, who came to the English hotel. FIFA said it would at least give a yellow card.
“There has been discussion about whether there is a legal basis for giving a yellow card, but there is.
“The penalty could have been a yellow card, that the captain had not come on the pitch or that he was given a ban.”

Kane is now a major doubt for Friday’s second group stage clash against United States.
The Spurs forward was still feeling discomfort on Tuesday and boss Gareth Southgate insisted on tests in Doha.
England are still hopeful that it is not too serious as he took part in a private warm-down session.
But the loss of Kane on Friday would be a huge blow for England despite their encouraging start.
Kane has previously suffered ankle issues but there have been few problems in the last two years.
None of England’s starting XI trained in the warm-down session but Southgate insisted on Monday night he was not worried.
He said: “I think Harry’s fine. It looked a bad tackle but he carried on in the game.
“We took him off really because we felt it was a moment we could do that.
“It was good to be able to refresh the forward line not only to get the players on, but also to get the players on because there were some very close calls in who starts in those positions.
“We have some fabulous talent and we had players that, if we needed them to change the game, they could do it.”
If England are to do well at the World Cup they need a fit Kane.
Their next training is a behind-closed-doors session on Wednesday morning.
Kane assisted two of England’s six goals in their stunning World Cup.
He is just three goals away from overtaking Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time top scorer.
Kane has already netted 51 times in 76 appearances for his country.
