Robbie Fowler’s arrival the fresh start Brisbane Roar desperately needed after disastrous season

Brisbane Roar have given Robbie Fowler the chance to prove his coaching credentials and he’s determined not to waste it, writes MARCO MONTEVERDE.

Robbie Fowler deserves the chance he has been given by Brisbane Roar.

Fowler’s football pedigree is unquestioned, and now he will rightfully get the opportunity to prove that he can coach.

He has the necessary qualifications, has worked with youth players at Liverpool, one of the world’s biggest clubs, and also has A-League knowledge from his time as a player here.

While it’s true not every great player makes a top coach, everyone needs a chance a prove themselves.

This is Fowler’s and he’s not about to waste it. The former England international has waited too long to throw this away.

Some may say it’s a gamble by the Roar, but the reality is they have got nothing to lose.

The club is at an all-time low on the field after a disastrous season.

Fowler’s arrival signals a fresh start, which is what the Roar – once the best team in the A-League – so desperately need.

It’s not the first time Brisbane have taken a punt with a coaching appointment.

Nobody wanted to know Ange Postecoglou in 2010. But the Roar didn’t let popular opinion sway them, and gave Postecoglou the gig.

The rest is history.

After clearing out a host of players upon his arrival, Postecoglou led the Roar to the premiership-championship double the season after, and another title the season after that playing a brand of football never before seen in the A-League.

Brisbane gave a similar chance to John Aloisi in 2015, and he went mighty close in his first season in charge to bringing silverware back to the club.

While Aloisi’s stint didn’t end well, he had the respect of the players, many of whom remain shattered by his December departure.

Darren Davies has done an admirable job in steering a rocky ship in extremely tough circumstances since Aloisi left, and he still has a big role to play as an assistant to Fowler.

But in signing a two-year deal with the Roar, Fowler knows the buck stops with him.

And he wouldn’t want it any other way.
