Tottenham has been plunged further into crisis with star defender Christian Romero taking an open shot at chairman Daniel Levy.

The club has crashed to sit 11th on the Premier League table following a disastrous loss to Chelsea on Monday where commentators called for Ange Postecoglou to walk out on the team.

Spurs have won just once in seven games in all competitions — and while it was assumed pressure has been building on the Australian, it has now been widely reported that the former Socceroos coach isn’t under any pressure to retain his job.

However, the 59-year-old now finds himself in one of his prickliest dilemmas yet being caught between Romero and Levy, who has always been one of Postecoglou’s biggest supporters.

Romero said the club’s board are the “true responsible ones” for a lack of progress.

Romero was speaking to Spanish broadcaster Telemundo after Sunday’s 4-3 defeat to Chelsea left Spurs 11th in the Premier League.

“Manchester City competes every year, you see how Liverpool strengthens its squad, Chelsea strengthens their squad, doesn’t do well, strengthens again, and now they’re seeing results.

Those are the things to imitate,” said the Argentine international in quotes widely circulated in British media.

“You have to realise that something is going wrong, hopefully, they (the board) realise it.” Tottenham broke their transfer record to sign Dominic Solanke in a deal worth up to $83 million in August, but most of the club’s estimated $160 million spend in the summer transfer market was on teenage talents Archie Gray, Wilson Odobert and Lucas Bergvall, who have had a limited first team impact.

Postecoglou faces a potentially decisive week of his reign with a trip to Rangers in the Europa League on Friday followed by a visit to bottom-of-the-table Southampton and a League Cup quarter-final against Manchester United.

Postecoglou is the fifth manager, including caretakers, that Romero has played under since joining Tottenham in 2021.

Spurs have not won a trophy since 2008 despite boasting one of the world’s best stadiums and a state-of-the-art training ground.

“The last few years, it’s always the same — first the players, then the coaching staff changes, and it’s always the same people responsible,” added the 26-year-old.

“Hopefully they realise who the true responsible ones are and we move forward because it’s a beautiful club that, with the structure it has, could easily be competing for the title every year.”

Levy has been widely praised for his role in helping the club into a powerhouse off the field, but it hasn’t delivered into the results fans want to see on the field.

Sky Sports pundit and ex-Liverpool star Jamie Carragher said on Tuesday it may be time for someone else to take over.

“It’s probably time for somebody else to come in because to not win a trophy in that period of time with the managers they have had, they’ve never really gone out of their way in the transfer market,” he said.

“They’ve spent decent money without blowing other teams out of the water, their wage bill is always one of the smallest and you’re never going to get the best players.

“Therefore, perhaps now is the moment for Daniel Levy whom I’ve generally admired due to the impressive work he’s accomplished but since that work is finished concerning a stadium and a training ground, it may be time for someone new to run the football side of the things.”
