Aussie Sam Kerr has been overlooked at the Ballon d’Or awards.
Alexia Putellas of Barcelona beat Kerr to win the women’s Ballon d’Or prize at a ceremony in Paris on Tuesday morning (AEDT).
The 27-year-old was rewarded after captaining Barcelona to Champions League glory.

She follows in the footsteps of Ada Hegerberg, who won the inaugural women’s Ballon d’Or in 2018, and United States World Cup star Megan Rapinoe, winner in 2019.
Kerr finished third in voting for the highest individual honour in football — from a list of 20 total players.
Spanish players finished 1-2 in the voting with Jennifer Hermoso losing out to countrywoman Putellas.
Kerr had been announced as one of the nominees for the award last month.
The nomination recognised Kerr’s sensational 2020/21 season in which she won the Golden Boot as the top-scorer in England’s Women’s Super League.
Kerr scored 28 goals across all competitions and helped Chelsea triumph in both the Super League and the League Cup.
The Matildas captain also led Australia to the semi-finals at the Olympics, scoring six goals in the Tokyo campaign.
It is just the third time the women’s Ballon d’Or has been awarded.
The 2020 Ballon d’Or awards were cancelled because of the pandemic. Putellas captained Barcelona to victory in this year’s Champions League, scoring a penalty in the final as her side hammered Chelsea 4-0 in Gothenburg.
She also won a Spanish league and cup double with Barca, the club she joined as a teenager in 2012, and helped her country qualify for the upcoming Women’s Euro in England.
It completes an awards double for Putellas, who in August was named player of the year by European football’s governing body UEFA.
