It wasn’t a top secret deal but Matildas midfield maestro Katrina Gorry has been officially announced as West Ham’s latest signing.

The 31-year-old who was a stand out for the Matildas at the FIFA Women’s World Cup announced near the end of last year she would not be continuing with her Swedish club Vittsjö GIK where she has played the last two seasons.

Fellow Aussies Charli Grant and Clare Polkinghorne have also departed the club over the off-season with Grant joining WSL club Tottenham and Polkinghorne heading to Swedish club Kristianstads DFF.

Gorry announced her departure and then confirmed her partner Clara Markstedt, who retired at the end of the season, was pregnant.

Her cryptic social media post hinted at a “new adventure”. And while there had been rumours she would rejoin A-League side Brisbane Roar, West Ham had always been the frontrunner to secure her signature.

Gorry isn’t the only Aussie at the English club with Matildas goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold the club’s captain.

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr’s fiance Kristie Mewis has also signed with West Ham this transfer window.

The midfielder will have a tough task ahead of her when matches resume with West Ham, who have won just one league game, facing Kerr’s Chelsea in the FA Women’s Cup on January 14.

“I’m really pleased to sign for West Ham United,” Gorry told West Ham TV.

“The club spoke my language. West Ham is a family Club and that was a big factor for me wanting to join. I’ve felt the support from everyone straight away and there is no better place for me to be right now.”

“The Women’s Super League is the league everyone is speaking about at the moment. I want to challenge myself and play against and with the best players in the world,” she said.
