James Johnson has made the shock decision to resign as Football Australia’s chief executive officer.

James Johnson has resigned from his role as Football Australia chief executive officer.

In a shock move, Johnson said the “time was right to step down” after five and a half years in the position.

“It has been a privilege to lead Football Australia ... having had the pleasure to work alongside the most talented, committed and dedicated staff, executives and board members,” he said.

“As someone who is immensely passionate about Australian football, this decision has not come easy, but I believe the time is right to step down.

“I want to extend my thank you to the Football Australia board and everyone within the Australian football community for their support during my tenure.

“Football is a local and global sport, so no matter where I am, I will always be here to support Football Australia and Australian football.”

FA board member and Matildas great Heather Garriock has been named interim chief executive officer, with Johnson to “finalise key projects to ensure a smooth transition” before departing.

FA chairman Anter Isaac thanked Johnson for his “unwavering leadership and dedication”. “James has guided Football Australia through extraordinary challenges and leaves a great legacy,” Isaac said.

“We wish him every success for the future.”

Johnson’s achievements including leading FA’s successful bid to host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, as well as securing hosting rights to the next year’s AFC Women’s Asian Cup.
