Former Matildas player Elissia Carnavas carjacked live on Aussie radio

A radio host has described the “most terrifying moment” of his career when a live interview was cut short by the screams of a guest.

A former Matildas star was in the middle of a live radio interview when her deafening screams cut the interview short, shocking listeners.

Elissia Carnavas (nee Canham) was speaking to Simon Hill on SEN Radio’s The Global Game on Tuesday night when she fell victim to an alleged carjacking.

The 37-year-old says she lives in Brisbane but it’s unknown whether she was there during the alleged carjacking.

The football star is a weekly guest on The Global Game and was mid-sentence when she started screaming as men surrounded her vehicle.

Hill took to Twitter after the incident to reassure his listeners that Ms Carnavas had escaped the horrifying incident.

“Shout out to Elissia Carnavas who had an awful experience tonight live on air as thieves attempted to hijack her car. Thankfully, she got out of that situation and is fine,” he posted to Twitter.

“The most terrifying moment of my career that’s for sure, and we’re just relieved she’s OK.”

Listeners who had tuned into the live broadcast quickly turned to social media to share what happened.

‘The audio of this made my blood run cold, about as horrifying as it gets. Thankfully, all seems to be well,” one user wrote on Twitter.

“Credit to Simon Hill and the Global Game team for handling that moment as well as you can and hopefully has all the support she needs.”

“That was insane! During The Global Game tonight the guest talking to Simon Hill on a phone-in interview had someone try to hijack her car mid-interview,” another wrote.

NCA NewsWire has contacted Queensland Police for comment.

SEN released a statement after the terrifying live interview.

“To all who heard Elissia Carnavas on air, she is OK,” a spokesman said.

“A scary situation which she has managed to get herself out of. We thank everyone for their concern.”

Ms Carnavas made history as the first African-born woman to feature in an Australian national team.

She was instrumental in the 2021 independent review of the Matildas team after allegations of bullying, intimidation and inappropriate behaviour towards certain members of the side.
