Ethan Alagich wins Aurelio Vidmar Medal as Adelaide United prepares for new coach and return of Craig Goodwin

The son of an Adelaide United great has earnt the club’s highest individual award for a men’s player, while a stalwart is set to return to the Reds.

Socceroos star Craig Goodwin’s return to Adelaide United is imminent as the Reds prepare for life under coach-in-waiting Airton Andrioli.

The Carl Veart era officially came to an end on Wednesday at the club’s awards night, where 21-year-old midfielder Ethan Alagich was named player of the season and awarded the Aurelio Vidmar Medal.

“Ethan’s had a fantastic season,” departing coach Veart said of the son of Reds great Richie Alagich.

“His consistency, maturity, and work ethic have been outstanding, especially for someone so young.

“He’s stepped up in big moments and become a vital part of our midfield. The whole club is proud of what he’s achieved.”

While the Reds are yet to announce the appointment of Andrioli – first mooted by News Corp Australia as Veart’s likely replacement – confirmation of the Brazilian’s elevation to the head coaching role is expected by the end of the month.

Goodwin, 33, is set for another stint at the Reds after two seasons with Saudi Arabian club Al-Wehda.

His return comes as the club’s Spanish veterans Isaias Sanchez and Javi Lopez retire from football.

Isaias and Lopez will remain with the Reds as part of the club’s coaching staff.

Reds head of football Marius Zanin said: “We’re incredibly fortunate that their journey with the club will continue in coaching roles, where they will shape the next generation and pass on the values they have embodied throughout their careers.”

Other changes in the squad will includes the departures of midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe and utility Josh Cavallo, who both won’t be offered new contracts.

Meanwhile, American midfielder Erin Healy was awarded the Dianne Alagich Medal on Wednesday night after being named the Reds’ women’s player of the season.

Adelaide’s women’s coach Adrian Stenta said Healy had been “outstanding” in her performances and “professionalism”.

“She arrived straight from Europe and hit the ground running, and even after injury, made a huge difference in our finals push,” Stenta said.

“Her mindset, creativity, and team-first attitude have made her a key part of the group, and this award is thoroughly deserved.”
