Socceroos star Aaron Mooy was a notable absentee as Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic suffered a 3-1 UEFA Champions League loss to German club RB Leipzig.

Mooy suffered an injury at training and was ruled out of the Scottish outfit’s squad for Thursday morning’s contest at Red Bull Arena in Leipzig.

Postecoglou was disappointed with bis side’s performance, with the loss resulting in Celtic sliding to the bottom of Group F with just one point from three matches.

The Hoops were in the game when Portuguese star Jota equalised in the 47th minute after Christopher Nkunku had given the hosts a first-half lead.

However, a mistake from Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart led to Leipzig regaining the lead in the 64th minute through Andre Silva.

Silva’ second goal 13 minutes later sealed Leipzig’s win and moved the German team into third place in the group.

“We scored and then we gave them a second goal which at this level you can’t do,” former Socceroos coach Postecoglou told Celtic TV.

“We shouldn’t be giving a second goal away as we did, but I felt it was creeping in before that.

“We were getting negative with our passing ... we need to be more positive.

“There are fine margins between success and failure and we fell on the wrong line of it again.”

In further bad news for Celtic, captain Callum McGregor injured his knee and had to be replaced in the first half.

“That’s a big blow. We don’t know the extent of it, but obviously he’s a very big player for us and we could have done with his leadership in the second-half,” Postecoglou said

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Socceroos captain and goalkeeper Mat Ryan was an unused substitute in his Danish team FC Copenhagen’s 5-0 away loss to Manchester City.

Australian striker Nikita Rukavytsya came on in the 84th minute of his Israeli side Maccabi Haifa’s 3-1 loss to Italian club Juventus in Turin.
