AARON Mooy is expected to become the most expensive Australian signing of all-time — and he doesn’t even have to move very far.
Reports out of England say Mooy has agreed terms on a permanent transfer to newly-promoted English Premier League side Huddersfield Town.
Huddersfield agreed a $16.7 million deal with Manchester City to sign Mooy, after the Australian had played for the Terriers on loan this season.
Mooy helped the side achieve promotion to the Premier League, when they won the playoff final last month and now he will call Huddersfield his home permanently.
Mooy played 51 times while on-loan at Huddersfield, scoring four goals.
Huddersfield will have to pay $13 million upfront, with an additional $3.37 million owed in adds ons, if Mooy reaches certain milestones.
Not only does Mooy become the most expensive Australian of all-time, but he also breaks Huddersfield’s transfer record.
The previous record was just $1.8 million ($3.03 million) on defender Christopher Schindler.
Mooy’s transfer eclipses Mark Viduka’s move from Celtic to Leeds United, Harry Kewell’s switch from Leeds United to Liverpool and most recently Brad Smith’s move from Liverpool to Bournemouth.
It will be Mooy’s second taste at the English Premier League, having spent time with Bolton Wanderers as a youth player.
The Australian never made an appearance for Manchester City, having moved from sister club Melbourne City FC.
However Manchester City’s Brazilian star Fernandinho said Mooy would prove a hit in the Premier League, having tackled the Socceroos in Australia this week.
“He’s a really good player, he’s shown his quality to us,” Fernandinho said “We had a game against Huddersfield (in the FA Cup), but because he was our player he didn’t play.
“Without any doubt he has a really good future. He’s really physical and has many good qualities.
Mooy will prove a pivotal part of the Socceroos side at the Confederations Cup, which kicks off next week in Russia.
Australia open their campaign against Germany on Tuesday morning (AEST).
Unbelievable we're potentially signing Mooy. Never thought I'd see the day Town spend £10m in a transfer window, let alone on one player

CFG selling Mooy for $17m. Bought Melbourne Heart for $12m. Nice ROI on that one.
