Sydney FC are bracing for the worst news possible following a knee injury to 24 year-old midfielder Chris Zuvela that saw him stretchered off in their 2-1 victory over Wellington on Monday night.

Zuvela, who has been on the books of the Sky Blues for six years, is feared to have ruptured his ACL for a second time having only just returned from a full reconstruction around 12 months ago.

The injury is to the opposite knee that he damaged last time, and he was said to have been in a distraught state in the changing rooms of the reigning back-to-back champions post-match.

While the club is awaiting the results of scans, coach Steve Corica opened up on how devastating a second reconstruction would be for Zuvela, if that is confirmed.

“It’s extremely hard to take. Myself as a player I did it, I had two operations straight after each other. I know what he’s going through,” he said.

“He worked extremely hard to get back and obviously he’s back fit and playing. We don’t know for sure yet, so we’ll wait. We’re all staying positive for him and we’ll look after him.”

The injury news doesn’t get match better for Sydney with livewire attacker Trent Buhagiar to miss around three weeks as well with a knee injury suffered in training on Thursday.

His absence will off-set by the return of former A-League golden boot winner Bobo, who is set to feature in Sydney’s Melbourne road trip where they’ll take on Western United and Melbourne City on Saturday and Tuesday respectively.

Young attackers Patrick Wood, who started against Wellington, and Jordi Swibel, who came off the bench, will also get the chance to impress some more in Buhagiar’s absence.

“The two young boys in the next couple of games will probably start between them,” Corica said.

“We’ll see if Bobo can start but I thought Patrick Wood did well tonight, he worked hard and had a big chance, and he’ll definitely get another go in the next few games.”
