Rising star Georgia Voll is set to be rewarded with her maiden Australian call-up in the absence of an injured Alyssa Healy for next month’s one-day international series against India.
Aussie skipper Healy, 34, was ruled out of the latter stages of the Women’s Big Bash League season with a knee injury that placed her in doubt for the three ODIs that begin in Brisbane on December 5.
It’s understood that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter will not be included when the Australian squad is named on Saturday, leaving Tahlia McGrath to again stand in as captain.
Beth Mooney is the logical option to don the gloves with Healy missing, having done so when Healy was injured during the recent Twenty20 World Cup.
But it is Voll who has been earmarked to fill Healy’s void at the top of the order.
The 21-year-old Queenslander has plundered 299 runs from nine games to help drive Sydney Thunder to the top of the WBBL table this season, while she was among the top five runscorers during last season’s Women’s National Cricket League.
She also posted a double-century earlier this year in an invitational three-day game that featured many of Australia’s top domestic players.
Australia also has three one-day internationals in New Zealand later in December before attention turns to the multi-format Ashes series in January.
The Aussies are building towards next year’s 50-over World Cup in India where they will be defending the crown claimed in NZ in early 2022.
The side suffered a rare defeat at an ICC event when beaten in a semi-final by South Africa in the T20 World Cup last month. The Proteas were defeated by NZ in the final.
Australian coach Shelley Nitschke said last week that the team had not yet reviewed the shock loss.
“Obviously it was a really disappointing result for us … but there’s a fair bit coming up for us to look forward to,” Nitschke said.
“We actually haven’t had a chance to complete the review yet, but when the players come back together … that’s going to be a really good for us to be able to create a bit of space now between that game and coming back to really dig in.”
