Queensland say paceman Michael Neser ready for Test selection

December’s Test series against Pakistan might be too soon, but Queensland coach Wade Seccombe believes Bulls paceman Michael Neser would thrive in the international game.

Aussie Cricket season: your complete guide

Bulls coach Wade Seccombe has called for Australian selectors to consider Michael Neser in their long-term bowling plans, admitting he’s surprised the Queenslander has not been handed a Test debut.

“Us Queenslanders think he should be in the higher honours definitely, cause he consistently performs,” Seccombe said.

“His bad games aren’t bad games at all, he’s just at a consistently high level. He gets wickets, he controls a run-rate and controls an end and puts pressure on the opposition so I’d love to see him get greater opportunities at a higher level.”

Neser is unlikely to feature in next month’s Pakistan series with NSW pace trio Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood leading the charge but Seccombe believes the 29-year-old would “thrive” in international cricket.

“Currently the state of Australian cricket is that we’ve got some pretty good cricketers who are sitting in the supposed pecking order in front of him so I think he’s just got to keep doing what he’s doing, knocking it down and when his opportunity comes, he’ll be going OK.”

Seccombe’s side is well-positioned to topple Western Australia on day 4 of their Sheffield Shield clash and will likely introduce spin from both ends with Mitch Swepson and Marnus Labuschagne.

“We’ve got the luxury of having the spinners and based on the way Sweppo bowled first inning which I thought was exceptional, it does fill you with confidence on a fourth day wicket.

“He’s been bowling really well all season in premier cricket and 2nd XI cricket so I didn’t have any doubt he’d bowl well when he got his chance.

“It’s just been a really unfortunate for him that the wickets we’ve been presented here at the Gabba and the make-up and balance of our side hasn’t been to his advantage, but now we’ve got the balance right and the wicket suits him.”
