AUSSIE opener Matt Renshaw is hoping a Big Bash cameo will shape him into a more dynamic Test cricketer and silence his critics for good.

Renshaw will pull on the teal of the Brisbane Heat in this summer’s BBL after signing his first professional Twenty20 contract.

Chalk and cheese is the best way to describe Renshaw and Brisbane’s Big Bash specialist Chris Lynn, who whacked a whopping 26 sixes in the last tournament.

Renshaw was criticised for his slow batting last summer — he has a Test strike rate of 43.78 in 10 matches — but stuck solid with his technique to cement his spot in the national side.

The 21-year-old opener said the criticism affected him in last year’s Boxing Day Test and the condensed format of the game will help him shine in the Baggy Green.

“The reason I got picked (for Australia) was because of my temperament and that’s what I’ve got to remember,” Renshaw said.

“When you get booed for blocking a ball and playing-and-missing in your first Test it’s quite funny. It’s something I’ve got to get used to.

“I know that’s what works for me. It’s got me a Test hundred and Baggy Green. I have to keep doing that. That’s what the coaches and selectors are telling me to do.

“I know my game plan is settled in Test cricket and that makes me feel like I can succeed.

“This gives me another opportunity to expand my game. I can find balls that I probably wouldn’t have scored off before. It’s exciting to work on that.”

The Heat also added emerging fast bowler Brendan Doggett to their roster for the tournament which begins against the Melbourne Stars on December 20.

If all goes to plan, Renshaw may only play a few matches for the Heat this summer once the Ashes wraps up in early January.

While Renshaw is more turtle than hare when wearing white, the towering left-hander has the ability to clear the boundary.

He has hit 21 sixes in 25 First Class matches, a better strike rate than the explosive David Warner (73 sixes in 92 matches).

“I have to work out the best way for me to bat,” he said. “I need to be able to work out what shots are there for me and what shots are a no-go zone for me.

“Twenty20 will help me work out where my strong areas are and what’s a weak area.”

Renshaw has had a lean domestic summer so far and is searching for runs to ensure his Ashes selection for the Gabba Test from November 23 is not debated.

He scored 17 and 16 in Queensland’s first round Sheffield Shield win against Victoria and is hoping for more time at the crease when the Bulls face Tasmania from Saturday in Hobart.

“I had a fairly good time in the middle in the first Shield game,” he said. “I probably threw it away a couple of times.”
