Mark Latham torched for ‘woke MCG scoreboard’ claim after Annabel Sutherland makes history

Former Labor leader and One Nation politician Mark Latham hammered the move but he was on his own.

Hometown hero smashes MCG record!

Australia’s Annabel Sutherland’s history-making century has been etched in the MCG history books, but former Labor leader turned One Nation politician Mark Latham isn’t happy about it.

Sutherland became the first woman to make a Test hundred at the MCG on Friday, surpassing England keeper Betty Snowball’s 83* in 1935 for the highest score by a female cricketer at the venue.

And on Saturday the 23-year-old’s name was permanently added to the ground’s Australia Test Century honour board, with the MCG social media account sharing the good news online.

“A very, very special addition to the MCG honour boards,” the MCG social media account said.

“A. J. Sutherland, the first woman to have her name etched in history for a Test Century at the ‘G.”

The move was widely celebrated, with fans loving that her name was on the same board as Aussie men who had achieved the same feat.

“A sign of the times. Brilliant MCG,” one fan wrote.

While another added: “I love this. No asterisk. No reference to it being different. It’s an Australian Test century at the MCG. End of story.”

But Latham wasn’t impressed, suggesting the fact Sutherland’s incredible achievement was on the same board as the men was ‘woke’.

“Might think it’s her dad,” Latham said on X. “Shouldn’t the Woke add pronouns?”

His quip was met with mass backlash, as the official MCG account began the roast of the politician.

“Her Dad’s name is James which does not start with the letter A. Hope this helps,” the MCG account wrote.

Another fan added: “Hahaha you got cooked by a cricket ground, I’d be embarrassed if I were you.”

However, Sutherland’s name on the iconic honours board is nothing less than what Sutherland deserves.

The batter grew up at the MCG watching the cricket and the footy and speaking what she had achieved at the dinner break on Friday, Sutherland was over the moon.

“Pretty special, it’s a pretty special place being a Victorian,” she said.

“Growing up there was no better place to be than spend time at the ‘G watching the cricket, watching the footy … few grand finals as a Cats fan but to be out there in the middle, it’s such a cool occasion for the whole group.”
