Jhye Richardson ruled out of Australia’s World Cup, Kane Richardson replacing him

Despite the heartbreak of missing the World Cup after injuring himself diving in the field, Jhye Richardson insists he would do the same again if it saved the team runs, and vowed to prove his Ashes fitness.

Jhye Richardson is targeting a return for the Australia A series in England to prove he is right to lead the attack in the first Ashes Test match at Edgbaston.

Richardson, 22, was on Wednesday withdrawn from Australia’s 15-man World Cup squad after struggling to bowl in the nets because of the shoulder he dislocated in the field on March 24.

But the West Australian vowed he would not change his approach in the field despite the injury costing him the chance to help deliver Australia its sixth World Cup.

“If I’m trying to save runs for the team … then I wouldn’t hesitate to do it again,” he said.

“To be honest, that’s the way I want to play my cricket.

“That’s the way I want to play for Australia, I want to be able to put my body on the line. That’s what it means to me, and if I get injured doing so then so be it, I can accept that.”

Richardson was replaced by death bowler Kane Richardson, who led the Big Bash League with 24 wickets for Melbourne Renegades last summer.

The young quick flies home to Perth from Brisbane today to continue his rehabilitation.

Shane Warne said Richardson was built for the Ashes tour because he bowls a perfect length for English conditions.

Richardson said he was “at peace” with last night’s diagnosis despite staying optimistic over the past six weeks.

“World Cups don’t come around every day,” he said.

“I still thought I had a chance … even though people around me were telling me it wasn’t going as well as they would’ve liked.

“In terms of rehab everything is going well — strength is good, movement is good — it’s just bowling that wasn’t meant to be.”

Coach Justin Langer hailed Richardson a “shining light” as he burst on to the scene in all three formats for Australia this year.

Richardson took 24 wickets from 12 ODIs at an average of 26.3, including bowling Australia to victory with a career-best 4/26 against India at the SCG.
