Cricket World Cup: West Indies captain Jason Holder keen to hit back from Proteas horror

WEST Indies paceman Jason Holder could do with a break after conceding a near-record 104 runs in his most recent game in the World Cup. Is the WACA the answer?

WEST Indies paceman Jason Holder could do with a break after conceding a near-record 104 runs in his most recent game in the World Cup.

And travelling to Perth to play on the notoriously pacy WACA pitch might be just what the under-siege skipper needs.

That’s the upside.

The downside is West Indies (2-2 win-loss) is matched on Friday against unbeaten Pool B leader and defending champion India.

Holder made his one-day international debut at the WACA in February 2013 and he says it was a special time.

“Traditionally the WACA has presents a lot of pace and bounce,” he said.

KOHLI AFFAIR RUMBLES ON AS INDIA TRY TO FOCUS

“I’ve played here before and I’ve enjoyed the conditions.

“Tomorrow will be no exception to that.

“It means a lot to me. Making my debut here was a dream come true.

To be able to play for West Indies against Australia here in my first game, it just touched me a bit.

“Being back here now I would just like to improve on my performance from last time.”

Holder’s 1-104 against South Africa last Friday at the SCG is the fifth-most runs conceded by a bowler in an ODI game.

Jason Holder is hoping the WACA pitch provides some assistance.

“It’s cricket. You have good days, you have bad days,” he said.

“I’ve had a bad bowling effort in a sense in the last game. I will just try to learn from it.

“I’m not too disheartened from it. I’ve taken a lot from it.

“I’m just looking forward to coming back stronger.”

Holder said Kemar Roach, who struck a blow of Ricky Ponting’s left arm in a fiery spell during the 2009 Perth Test, is under consideration for a recall.

“Conditions here seem to favour fast bowling,” Holder said.

“We still have to make a decision tonight and announce it tomorrow.”

The Windies just couldn’t stop AB De Villies.

Holder at least doesn’t have to cope with the mind-blowing strokeplay of South African superstar AB de Villiers.

But he says India’s batting line-up is strong, led by the “phenomenal” Virat Kohli.

Holder also suggested the cards are stacked against the bowler with only four fielders allowed outside the circle.

“The more time you spend ponder the field restrictions it makes life a little bit more difficult,” Holder said.

“In cricket we forget about it and try to cope with it.

“Having four fielders outside the ring is quite tough.”

Pace-bowling great Curtly Ambrose is mentoring the Windies.

“He is just trying to impart his knowledge among the boys,” Holder said.

“We’ve just got to be a little bit more disciplined. Execution is the key.”
