GLENN MAXWELL’s fragile T20 future has landed in Ricky Ponting’s lap as the batsman’s eight-year feud with an Indian great erupts.
Coach Ponting has dropped Maxwell from the Punjab Kings side after scores of 0, 30, 1, 3, and 7 in the Indian Premier League with former Indian great Virender Sehwag accusing Maxwell of having a “holiday.’’
In a stunning take-down of the Australian star, Sehwag told Cricbuzz: “ “Maxwell, (Liam) Livingstone have no hunger anymore. They come to India to spend their holidays. It’s not like they love their teams, or that they are passionate about winning games for them. That they have not won a trophy yet and they have to get it done this year.
“I have played with a lot of overseas players, out of which maybe one or two of them had the hunger. These other guys only talk and do not show any performance on the field.”
Sehwag and Maxwell have a combustible history exposed last year when Maxwell’s book revealed he had fallen out badly with Sehwag during a previous period with the Punjab Kings.
“When it came to selection, I thought it might be a good idea to bring the coaches into a WhatsApp group to make our decisions,’’ Maxwell wrote.
“Everyone agreed to this and shared their teams, with the exception of Sehwag.
“At the end of the process, he made it clear that he would pick the starting XI — end of story. We were losing on and off the field by then, with Sehwag on more than one occasion making decisions that didn’t necessarily make sense.’’
At the end of a season of failure Maxwell said he volunteered to do the final press conference but Sehwag intervened and publicly called him “a big disappointment.’’
Maxwell is not the only out of form Australian. Batting enigma Jake Fraser-McGurk has been dropped by the Delhi Capitals after making just 55 runs in six matches due to poor shot selection.
Mitchell Marsh, with four half centuries and additional scores of 45 and 30, has been the surprise packet for Lucknow Super Giants while Josh Hazlewood, with 12 wickets in eight games, has been Australia’s most impressive fast man.
