Groundbreaking technology used in American baseball has been unveiled in Australia to help cricket viewers gain an unprecedented perspective on all the big moments this summer.
With more than 80 cameras mounted around the stadium, Fox Cricket has added a stunning 360-degree dimension to its in-play analysis, nicknamed The Fox Halo.
The technology involves 4D replays being utilised on Fox and Kayo’s cricket coverage – a landmark first in Australian sport.
Inspired by the technology pioneered in Major League Baseball in the US, the NFL and the recent NBC coverage of the Olympic Games, Fox Cricket has now joined the revolution.
The cameras capture real-time 360-degree replays and allow commentators to pause footage and switch to different angles of the same shot or delivery in real time.
Fox Cricket executive producer Joe Bromham said the new technology has changed the game for cricket analysis.
“It’s really made for cricket,” Bromham said.
“In one instant replay you see the batter’s set up, his footwork, technique, point of contact and for the bowlers you see their positioning and release points. It’s an incredible innovation for analysis.
“Our coverage is going to the Indian audience through Star and they’re raving about Fox Halo.
“There was a cut shot from Yashasvi Jaiswal which just showed his footwork and his movement and when he contacted the ball both his feet were up off the ground. It just showed it perfectly.”
Fox Cricket is also working on AI-generated innovations which will also revolutionise broadcasting analysis when introduced.
The Halo technology was first seen in Major League Baseball as a new way to analyse hitters and pitchers.
It was also used at the Olympics in Paris for sports like gymnastics and diving where viewers were given a 360 view of routines.
“I think with no ad breaks between overs, our technology allows us to tell the story better,” Bromham said.
“That viewer experience is always at the heart of what we do and we’re constantly evolving every summer.”
