Australian all-rounder Daniel Sams has been forced into isolation in a medical facility in India after testing positive for COVID-19.

Sams flew to India last week to take up his Indian Premier League contract with Royal Challengers Bangalore who confirmed he tested positive on Wednesday.

The team revealed Sams tested negative on arrival to the team hotel but had somehow contracted the disease in the four days since that test.

“Daniel Sams checked into the team hotel in Chennai on April 3rd, with a negative COVID report on arrival,” a statement said.

“His report from the 2nd test on 7th April came positive. Sams is currently asymptomatic and he is currently in isolation at a designated medical facility.”

Sams is among a host of Australian players, coaches and officials in India for the tournament, which is scheduled to begin this weekend.

The 28-year-old left Australia on April 1 and arrived in Chennai via Doha. He had to quarantine for seven days and couldn’t join his teammates at RCB, which included Australians Glenn Maxwell, Dan Christian, Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson.

Maxwell and Christian have been training with the RCB squad but Zampa and Richardson are yet to arrive in India to join the team, which also features superstars Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

India has reported more than 12 million cases of COVID-19, including more than 166,000 deaths.

There were 115,736 new cases detected on Tuesday alone, and there are still more than 750,000 active cases in India.

Veteran Australian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed also contracted the coronavirus earlier this year during his stint in the Pakistan Super League. He recovered, although the virus killed his mother last year.

“But this virus, it’s bloody tough. I struggled, but I can’t imagine how older people and poor people are struggling with this virus,” Ahmed told cricket.com.au last month.
