Cameron Green scores commanding 94 for WA ahead of first Ashes Test

Cameron Green has fallen agonisingly short of a Sheffield Shield century, but is in good batting form ahead of the first Ashes Test.

Cameron Green has warmed up for next week’s opening Ashes Test with a Sheffield Shield innings of 94 for Western Australia against Queensland at the WACA.

Batting at No.4 for the hosts, Green hit eight fours and a six in a commanding knock before being trapped LBW by veteran Bulls paceman Michael Neser on Thursday.

All-rounder Green looms as a certain selection in Australia’s team for the first Test against England starting next Friday at Optus Stadium.

It’s where he will bat in the top six that is seemingly yet to be decided.

If selectors opt to play both Green and fellow all-rounder Beau Webster, Green would almost certainly bat at three, with Webster the No.6 and Queenslander Marnus Labuschagne to make his return to the Test team as an opening partner of Usman Khawaja.

However, if the selectors axe Webster, Green would drop down the order to six, Labuschagne would bat in his preferred No.3 position, and Tasmania’s Jake Weatherald would make his Test debut as an opener alongside veteran Khawaja.

Green top-scored for WA, who declared at 7-322, 68 runs short of Queensland’s first innings total of 390.

Neser took 2-47 from 20.3 overs to remain in contention to replace injured NSW paceman Sean Abbott (hamstring) in Australia’s Test squad.

Green later bowled eight overs amd finished the day with the figures of 0-17 as the Bulls slumped to 8-187 in its second innings for an overall lead of 255 runs with one day remaining.

Labuschagne fell for just 11, while Jack Clayton (54) and Matt Renshaw (51) were the best of the Queensland batsmen.
